Hi! I am new to this group and recently found out I was 13 weeks

pregnant when I was told I would never conceive due to abnormal

endocrine system. I would like to have a " NT " or Weston Price

pregnancy and was reading about the benefits of cod liver oil

http://www.westonaprice.org/nutrition_guidelines/codliveroil.html

Cod liver oil contains more vitamin A and more vitamin D per unit

weight than any other common food. One hundred grams of regular cod

liver oil provides 100,000 IU of vitamin A

I guess my concern in reading this is that my OBGYN doc said that

high levels of vitamin A during pregnancy can lead to fetus

abnormalities and even miscarriage. Also, my prenatal vitamin

already has 5,000 IU's in addition

any insight would be helpful thanks

hi, jennifer:

personally i'd ditch the prenatal vitamins and spend the money on good

food. prenatal vitamins have ridiculously high levels of stuff, most of

which you don't need! for example, the studies that lead them to believe

that women needed folic acid for pregnancy were done exclusively on urban

minority welfare women - who do not exactly have a high-veggie intake! you

will get *plenty* of folates from good quality veggies and strawberries.

if you're specifically concerned about the vitamin a and d, take fish oil

instead - it is a and d free. i particularly like carlson's, since it's

lemony-tasting. i'm sure there are other opinions on the brand!

have you considered a midwife?

I used krill oil, Carlson's fish oil, butter oil and CLO during my recent

pregnancy. Oh and I also used Garden of Life's Primal Defense and Perfect Food.

I

varied the CLO (different brands) so I wasn't getting too much A & D. Carlson's

has lower levels than the high vitamin brands.

I had my first child 3 weeks ago. (I'm 33.) Instead of pre-natals I took the

following

supplements: 1-2 tbsp daily of nordic naturals cod liver oil. Thorne brand

folic acid

in liquid form and sometime their b-vitamin pills. Chelated magnesium pills.

Vitamin

C pills. Concentrace minerals in my drinking water.

My labor, while it seemed like forever, went a lot better than most labors go

these

days. I had 100% natural childbirth in a hospital. Baby came out just fine,

alert and

healthy.

I would totally skip any retinol from a pill because it's so easy to

get the naturally-occurring stuff. [EAT LIVER!] And there are major

question marks about synthetic retinol. Keep in mind a lot of the

beliefs about dangers with high retinol intake are based on synthetic

retinol. I'm sure you've already read the excellent WAPF article on

this topic, but I'd research this stuff more carefully and not just

take that doc's word for it. High intake of vit A during pregnancy

in one of the cornerstones of the WAP approach! Of course, one

guy's work from a long time ago is not the final word, but it's

evidence to factor in.

That's definitely true about folate; you can very very easily get

plenty from veggies. [AND EAT LIVER!] You'll find a ranking of folate-

content for a lot of foods in one of my posts from last month (just

scroll down to the bottom past all the milk faff):

/message/43704

(I don't see that strawberries were included in that list, but I just

looked it up and at 0.75mcg/cal they are a decent source, but there

are lots of common foods that are much higher...)

I totally agree with Katja about getting it all from food... It

seems like people get pressured into taking pills for pregnancy

because of misinformation or myths, when it's not hard at all to get

everything from food...
