Guest guest
, as far as I know, it's only if you have prolonged exposure to the loose fibres that it is dangerous. But that's just my opinion and what I've heard, not based on any medical evidence. We had an asbestos roof until it got trashed in the hailstorm last year (guess that loosened the fibres!). Maybe I was exposed but asbestosis doesn't emerge until 20 years after exposure I've been told, so I'll tell you in 20 years' time!! Hulda claims to find asbestos fibres in tumours and cysts - but then she comes across as a bit paranoid. Personally I think staying at your friend's house for a little while isn't going to put you in any grave danger. Guest guest
>> Personally I think staying at your friend's house for a little while isn't going to put you in any grave danger. Sorry , just realised how patronising that sounds. I didn't mean to make fun of you - I think it's a valid concern. So often we're told by the " authorities " that things aren't toxic for us when they are. But I think asbestos is only dangerous when it's loose - as you mentioned. Guest guest
No offence taken :-) Yes that is what I afraid of. Being misled by " authorities " who don't give a toss about my well being and would gladly see me leaving my house looking like homer simpson after he leaves the power plant as long as I kept spending till I died. _____ From: Filippa [mailto:filippa91@...] Sent: Wednesday, 17 March 2004 4:44 PM Subject: Re: [OT] asbestos >> Personally I think staying at your friend's house for a little while isn't going to put you in any grave danger. Im about to move house to a mates for a little while and he told me last night there was asbestos in the roof I know the sever dangers of it but not sure if its ok where it is As long as you aren't layng it down and spreadin the fibers everywhere ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Is this asbestos insulation? We had a nice old house we sold a couple of years ago. The asbestos thing came up because the relocation company was buying it from us and didn't want any unnecessary liabilities. The company's rep never noticed what we thought might be asbestos tape wrapped around two vent ducts in the basement - who knows what it was - but the rest of the house was fine :-) The house inspector we hired told me that it depends on the age and condition that the asbestos is in as to how safe it is. There are terms for the stages of disintegration it goes through. If it is old, it could well be releasing dust into the house regularly without much provocation, especially if it is the insulating material that was blown into the walls, roof, floors, etc. Now, this house you're thinking of living in is a temporary thing, so it is probably okay short term. Auto mechanics have been dealing with asbestos on brakes for years. Perhaps they suffer for it too. Rates of asbestos related illness are on the increase in this country (US). Perhaps you might have a professional come out and look into it. Certainly your mate wants to know the hazards in the house s/he lives in. I know I sure would if it is anywhere near any regular living space. If it is a rental, then the landlord may be required to remove it or cover it, depending on your local laws. Good luck.
