Hi,

For a few years Sam (6) has been taking supplements and as he has alot of sensory problems in the mouth, he only likes dry food. He does drink water though. I seem to spend my life trying to get sam to take supplements, mixed in etc and have spent so much money doing this

Anyway, I went to see and she told me to try giving sam water in a glass with a straw, putting capsule on the tongue and the capsule will go right back.

I did it this morning and he took all his supplements fpr the first time in one go!!!!! I cant believe it!

Lets hope i get the same result tomorrow!!!

Hi

I started with my son when he was 5. Before that everything used to be added/emptied onto his food. It looked like I had emptied the vacuum cleaner and must have tasted terrible. So I sold the idea of swallowing capsules as taking away the nasty tasting things off his food.

I was very lucky as he mastered it without ever chewing any of the capsules. Mind you he is able to swallow lots of food without properly chewing it! However I still struggle with my 7 year old NT son, who has a strong gag reflex and just can't or won't swallow them.

Hi on the subject of swallowing capsules, those of you who have children that can-what age did you start trying to teach them and how did you go about it? Ella has just turned 4, but is on vba programme, so responds well to promised reinforcement. She currently takes everything off a spoon bless(it tastes gross!!)> >> > Anita, > > That is so clever - to make the capsules so tiny there isn't a > > problem with swallowing. Hi,

Our son is non verbal and we started when he was around 3 years and a half old. We started with very very small capsules and hidding them on fruit puree so he didn't realize he was actually swallowing a capsule. After doing this for sometime we tried with bigger capsules again hidden in fruit puree. Now we just put water and a capsule in a teaspoon and he swallows the capsule with no problem. We give him something he likes at the end of all his supplements. I have to say that I'm always impressed because I would have trouble swallowing the big ones. In our case I think it was important that at the beginning he didn't see the capsule and from then a question of practice. In case it helps they sell in pharmacies small empty capsules which may be good to start with.

Thanks guys-I guess you just have to try, I may have probs, cos she likes her food mainly blended-but can eat chips and crisps and fruit!! Shes clever but non-verbal(learning sign)at the momment so its hard to judge her understanding, I may have to wait until her receptive is a little better, so I can explain to her. Unless anyone has managed with a non verbal child? > > >> > > Anita, > > > That is so clever - to make the capsules so tiny there isn't a > > > problem with swallowing. Hi,

My son is on the scd diet and only likes what i call " dry food "

I have just started to do a clear out with oxypowder and he will not

take any food with the powder in.

I have tried giving him capsules, he gags, i have tried two syringes

of it mixed with OJ tonight but he gagged, spat it out and then i

gave him water which he swallowed and then threw up.

Now he wont take any of his other supplements which was put on top of

food (he has accepted this for a few years!)

Is there anyone out there who was in a similar situation, i dont mind

if you email me off the forum. I just really need to sort this as so

far the program is not going well for us and he really needs to start

taking his stuff, esp the oxypowder. (i nearly called it poxypowder

then, freudian slip!)

Any help will be most grateful as at wits end and feeling extremley

stressed and alone with this as i know no one who even has their

child on any form of diet.

Thanks

Kirsty

xx

Ps. Sam is 6 and verbal but v smart and v strong willed and there is

no pulling the wool over his eyes!

Canot explain and reason with him as his language is not that good

I melt Green and Black's 70% cocoa dark chocolate - one square per

coffee cup, put the cup in a bain marie to melt the chocolate, take

it out and away from the heat and mix in 2 caps of oxypowder per cup.

It's important the chocolate is just barely melted and not hot. Then

I let it set in the fridge. He happily eats his gritty chocolate. Not

an ideal solution... but there you go.

My friend's son is like yours in that he only likes dry food. She mixes

the supps with a tiny amount of water or juice in shot glasses. He downs

the contents for a reward. (Keep the best toy/ video/ computer game or

whatever for this) In fact he does it for no reward nowadays,

hi yes, managed it with eddie (non-verbal with words emerging at the moment).

taught him

last year to swallow capsules before signing up with jean muscroft, cos i knew

her list of

supplements was very long. we used combination of VB (reinforcement) and

son-rise

(modelling and fun). he soon realised that it was much easier to swallow

capsules than taste

horrible cocktails! i don't think you ever really know non-verbals receptive

language and you

can never underestimate, so i would always explain to eddie everything that's

happening and

assume that he's knows what i'm saying. when he gets it, its a bonus. for

example, we've

been working on " point to cow " as a receptive command on his program, the

therapist was

repeating the instruction in between reinforcing activities, after 5 requests he

said (and

remember he's non-verbal) " i don't care about the cow " !!!!! lol xxxxxxx

Hi Pat,

How long has your daughter been doing biomed-shes a bit older than

mine(her pic is on my profile)?

Hey guys Im new but just some positive thoughts - all your hard work

is beginning to pay off. Ella was diagnosed at 2 years 4 months by my

consultant community paed. No probs with diagnosis-classic autism.

When I pressed this consultant re:food allergies, she mentioned GF/CF

and Shattock!(mainstream dr)also said biomed hadn't 'cured' any

of the children she has seen, but they appear happier and healthy.

She is thinking about coming to Bournemouth!!

Ella was statemented at 3 and Swansea LEA has funded her VBA home

programme(without an appeal), they also fund reinforcers etc I need

to buy. I also get direct pmts and help from the NCH-this has enabled

me to do a 32hr home programme and only put £1000 of our own funds in

this year. Next year the LEA funding goes up as Ella will be in full

time eqv banding and we should manage without our funds.

This is mainly possible because I have a fantastic VBA consultant who

charges minimum rates(no where near £100 per hr). So things are

looking up, thanks to the hard work of all you mums that have fought

battles and tried to educate the so called professionals!!!!Thank

you :)
