FOUND IN Sweets, soft drinks, ice cream, fish fingers

vision. Said to cause hyperactivity in children when mixed with

benzoic acid

BANNED Norway and Austria

QUINOLINE YELLOW

WHAT IS IT? Synthetic dye derived from coal tar. Also used in

cosmetics and as pigment for tattoos

FOUND IN Sweets, soft drinks

EFFECTS Can lead to children's tantrums and hyperactivity

BANNED Norway, US, Japan and Australia

SODIUM BENZOATE

WHAT IS IT? Preservative made from benzoic acid and sodium

bicarbonate; occurs naturally in fruits

FOUND IN Soft drinks, salad dressings, table sauces

EFFECTS Fears that it can form benzene, a carcinogen, when it reacts

with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in soft drinks

NOT BANNED

ALLURA RED

WHAT IS IT? Coal-tar-derived dye, often mixed with yellow dyes for

orange shades

FOUND IN Sweets, soft drinks, condiments

EFFECTS Linked to adverse reactions in those allergic to aspirin and

hyperactivity in children

SUNSET YELLOW

WHAT IS IT? Coal tar dye

FOUND IN Sweets, yoghurts, cheap jam

EFFECTS Blamed for triggering stomach upsets and skin irritations.

Has also been linked to hyperactivity in children

CARMOISINE

WHAT IS IT? Coal tar dye

FOUND IN Sweets, yoghurts, ices

P.S. Regarding the tatrazine (yellow dye) , that was well-known already
