Guest guest
A HEALTH VISITOR IS NOT QUALIFIED TO GIVE YOU ADVICE ON THIS. She should not be giving her advice on your risk of having another child with a disability. In fact, your GP is not qualified to give you advice on this. ONLY a geneticist can tell you what the current medical opinion on this is after they have reviewed your family history. Since you have one child with a disability, you can request a referral to a geneticist. They will take a detailed history of yourself and your family, examine your child, and give you a rough estimate of your chances of having another child with a disability. Your GP or paediatrician can refer you. You may have a long wait. There *is* a higher prevalence of ASD and other associated disabilities (dyslexia, etc) among siblings but it is not considered " HIGH " among geneticist. We were not willing to take the risk, even though it was considered low. We simply would not be able to give another child with a disability the opportunities that we have been able to give and that would just kill us. Best wishes as you make your decision, Darla > > > > Dear Parents,I really need your opinion and of course hear your > experience about the thought of having another child.Today had the > visit of hte health visitor, had a very long chat and also told her that > having another child is in my thoughts. She really put me off saying > that the chances of having another child with autism are very high. What > do you think? Thanks for your sharing your thoughts with me. >
Guest guest
we saw a geneticist a couple of years ago who told us our chances were about one in ten. BUT there are things you can do to minimise your risk I am sure people would agree, in terms of your health. It's irresponsible for a health visitor to say the chances are very high. You are more likely than someone without an autistic child already but you are still more likely to have a child without ASD (far more likely). there is plenty of info out there and it's a huge decision but " very high risk " - not that I've heard of from the geneticist. Higher than average - yes. > > > > Dear Parents,I really need your opinion and of course hear your > experience about the thought of having another child.Today had the > visit of hte health visitor, had a very long chat and also told her that > having another child is in my thoughts. She really put me off saying > that the chances of having another child with autism are very high. What > do you think? Thanks for your sharing your thoughts with me. >

Guest guest
Hi My daughter took this risk. She kept her daughter gluten free for 2 years, spread any vaccines - only 1 at a time. Her daughter has not had MMR vaccine. Her daughter is fine. But I believe her son was damaged by vaccination. Guest guest
Maybe I'm deluding myself/foolishly optimistic, but I believe that if I were to have another child (I won't, too old and ds requires full-time care still) he/she would not become autistic. Yes, ds was more at risk genetically I suspect (dh was a wierd child, to say the least), but a number of events really pushed him (chicken pox, followed by MMR, followed by antibiotics, catch up vaccinations, and then flu shots). Obviously, I would never let that happen to another child. Also, with the knowledge available to us now, I believe that even tho parents on this board may have more genetic fragility, by doing the right things we can negate that and have a greater chance of a perfectly healthy baby than the remainder of the (ignorant) general population. If I were going to get pregnant, I would fix bacteria for both me and dh, take methyl donors and good CLO, etc, for both me and dh starting 6 months prior to try to conceive, do all those things listed on a previous thread about this. The agouti mouse study really showed to me that diet is protective against many, many things, especially in utero. Dr. Leitchman on another board said that of the 900 or so families at risk (autism, downs, or both) with proper supping, knowledge of vaxes, etc, none had kids with autism or downs. Even at the " normal " rate, at least some of those kids should have been affected. At the high risk rate, many of those kids should have been. If a first child became autistic having had no vaxes, mom with no fillings or vaxes, mom with perfectly healthy/clean diet, etc, then I would be concerned. However, I don't know very many people with this experience. It is very rare. The norm is people like me. Your health care visitor is completely unaware of all this, I am sure. Guest guest
My eldest boy is autistic. We were heavily vaccinated for a 2 week trip to Africa 12 months before conception. DS got all his vaccines and regressed at 12-18 months. His baby bro had no vaccines, breast fed, GF for first year and is both NT and a wonderful child (even if I did come close to killing him when he wouldn't eat dinner last night). I'd hate to think that fear would have erased his chance to live. Baby number 3 on the way. DW is GF, taking folic acid, no alcohol, etc. And I'm glad we did this. Chances of this child having ASD are tiny. We probably have a higher chance of having a child with cystic fibrosis, as dw is a carrier and I haven't been tested. Both our sons are carriers. I can't live in fear. Have to look forward. My eldest boy is severe ASD and he's going to need someone to mind him when we're gone. For that reason alone, I think it's worth the risk. Anyway, even it the next baby is on the spectrum, I'll still love him/her. And life can't get much weirder! Guest guest
I came across a blog whose owner is the father of 13 children. Their third child had autism and epilepsy and died a year ago, as a teenager. It seems the other 12 children do not have autism or epilepsy. Their 14th child is due in about 6 weeks. (Yes, the family is Catholic, and yes, they live in the States. The father is an anaesthetist.) Guest guest
Yeah, your post reminded me of Tammet (autistic savant who memorised pi) - his family had 9 children, two on the spectrum. Not particularly bad odds. But then there is a family in the US with six biological children, five of whom are on the spectrum. There was also the former Guardian columnist who had two severely affected boys and had a third child who was unaffected. As for reducing the risk, as I have stated numerous times before I did all the detox, saintly stuff for several years before conception and was still BORN with ASD, apparent from the day of birth in his uncoordinated sucking ability, uncoordinated swallow and extensive retained primitive reflexes. The onset had little to do with his vax's although they tipped him over the edge. I don't think anyone can predict much of anything. ;-) Darla > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dear Parents,I really need your opinion and of course hear > your > > > > > experience about the thought of having another child.Today > had > > > the > > > > > visit of hte health visitor, had a very long chat and also > told > > > her > > > > that > > > > > having another child is in my thoughts. She really put me off > > > saying > > > > > that the chances of having another child with autism are very > > > > high. What > > > > > do you think? Thanks for your sharing your thoughts with me. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Hi Barbara, Can't offer any help really, It's your choice, but at least it will be an informed one. And you can do all you can to minimise the risks. Like Anita I'm Waaay too old (Or so my teenage girls tell me) so it's not a dilemma for me. I think I've said before that in our family of 9 grandchildren, 3 have severe autism, 1 is being diagnosed at the mo (prob high functioning asd) 1 has bowel disease and 1 has allergies and asthma (and ODD I think!) Jane P.S Are you the Barbara that mailed me a while ago? I had trouble with my P.C and lost all my mail? Guest guest
20y ago when I was clueless about what was going on w my 3y old, her younger brother was born. He was a healthy little guy exc for lots of ear infections, minimally vaccinated[as were all my kids] and was a Godsend for the mentoring and tutoring he unknowingly offered his big sister. She adored him and was willing to 'teach' and learn many skills that she had missed as he progresed through normal developmental stages. He was early allergic to milk so had none until school age when he modeled peers for what to drink. This story repeats itself somewhat in the next geheration for our family. My now 8y grandson was a lead and mercury mess at age 3y. His mom, my oldest, had watched her younger sister go down the tubes and was willing to implement biomedical interventions early on for her son. Thankfully, he had missed many of the scheduled vaccines as he was always sick. He's had none since. He entered Kindergarten w no supportts and no one even aware of his toddler distress. He's funny, smart, social[and VERY fortunate!]. His younger brother, 6y now, has had no vaccines and is the healthiest of our grandchildren. This oldest daughter is very attentive to her children's diet. Neither have cow's milk to drink, not much other dairy and eat as arganic as possible w very little sugar. Lots of good responses about good diet, NO vaccines and supplements to use. If your heart is longing for another child, I say go for it! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dear Parents,I really need your opinion and of course hear > your > > > > > experience about the thought of having another child.Today > had > > > the > > > > > visit of hte health visitor, had a very long chat and also > told > > > her > > > > that > > > > > having another child is in my thoughts. She really put me off > > > saying > > > > > that the chances of having another child with autism are very > > > > high. What > > > > > do you think? Thanks for your sharing your thoughts with me. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Yes it was! Just to let you all know we won our case for the higher rate mobility component of DLA. It took 7 mos and we had award backdated to when ds 3rd birthday. Our paed backed us up in the end and agreed with us that ds decision to walk or not (dependant on external conditions)was not under his conscious control but was a behaviour which is part and parcel of his autism It was a sweet victory, and stopped being about the paltry 47 quid a week. It was a battle about gp's who'd never met my son or read his notes making assumptions and decisions about him. It was about drones on the end of the phone telling me I couldn't claim cos he wasn't 5. Or that autism doesn't get mobility component. Guest guest
You get a virtually free car with the top level of mobility. It's not £47 a week. That's why they fight it so much. You are entitled to Motorbility (I think that's what it's called). A car of your choice maintained by them for a £300 deposit. Guest guest
For a private speech therapist try doing a search on the following: http://www.helpwithtalking.com/ Personally, my son didn't make any progess with his speech until we started seeing a specialist speech therapist (in our case for dyspraxia). We had both private and local authority speech therapy for about 18 months without any progress. Make sure you don't end up spending a fortune in private speech therapy unless the therapist has extensive experience with autism. So yes more speech therapy can make a difference but only if you can find the right therapist.
