With regards to white noise, I saw a discussion by the neuroscience

guy who developed speech program Fast ForWord (Merzenich), and he said

that white sound/noise lights up the whole auditory cortex and seems

to stop the plastic period of cortical development (in rats, I think),

with all sorts of resultant problems for speech/attention etc.

I just looked up a blurb about it:

an-doidge-13.php

Anyway, our son is an early riser and we wanted to see if maybe the

stimulation to the auditory cortex in the am (when he was approaching

restedness) was helping to wake him up, and we found that if we turned

off the white noise machine after he went to bed (he needs it to fall

asleep) he slept later in the mornings. I told a friend and she had

the same results with her NT twins.

I know this won't apply to everyone, but it's an interesting

unorthodox position on white noise with some research being done as well.
