Likely the feed is the cheapest junk they can find. I think that loss of habitat is the biggest pressure on heir populations. Perhaps in the US the water is more polluted and that could be an issue for wild animals. I suppose wild animals also get a lot of their feed from farm lands and are exposed to agricultural chemicals that way. The deer are flourishing around here where I live, their populations are larger than they ever have been. Elk, and moose are becoming a bit rare though viable populations still live here.
