Its supposed to be really good but I am waiting for a copy to get into our library. Should have it next week so I will let you know if it is good and suitable for him! Guest guest
Does anyone have suggestions of books that deal with feelings, compassion, & emotions for the preschool AS child? Carolyn Dana, Are these books for you to read with your child, or books he is going to read on his own? How advanced are his reading skills (high level meaning what?) What do you hope he gets out of the reading? Why I am asking is that my son has some books he reads himself and others that we read together and talk about. Before I recommend anything, I want to make sure it is material that your son would be interested in or that you and he could discuss… Also, reading level is important, because there is nothing worse than getting a book that either makes them feel “insulted” for being too low or that they can’t get into because either it or its contents are too advanced… I love books. Between what I read for school, with my kids, and for pleasure, I probably go through about 1000 pages per week. There are some fantastic books out there that have a main character that doesn’t quite fit in due to “quirks” or where the main character doesn’t interact smoothly with others… Some have morals, feelings, or social issues that can be talked about… Others are just kind of quirky and fun… It all depends upon what you want to get out of the reading… Some of the books that I started with my son at age 11, he now re-reads to “refresh” on how the characters dealt with certain issues and how successful or unsuccessful they were with dealing with it. He also goes through some to try and understand the “emotions” of the different parties involved in certain situations. He can relate to the characters and is now applying the “lessons” to real live situations he is facing in junior high. If he is having a bad day, he seems to compare it to days that characters have had to judge whether it was really that bad… which often makes him feel like it was more manageable… Anyway, I am very glad I used some reading time to go over some of the issues he would face, because now he has some pre-existing “templates” that he is working off of… (teasing, racism, sportsmanship, peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, rules, authority figures that aren’t always right, suicide, abuse, identity issues, raw emotions, determining how others are feeling in a situation… all from the perspective of someone who doesn’t seem to “get it”)… Others are just more advanced science fiction that deals with emotions and how to tell if something is dangerous, if people can be trusted, and how to judge a situation… It all depends upon the child… If he isn’t yet to this level, there are always the basics (4th grade nothing, Superfudge, captain underpants, treasure island, Blackbeard, 20,000 leagues under the sea, any of the classics including Sherlock Holmes and Old Yeller…) The Redwall series is great for this age as long as they can get into longer novels (my son started on these at 8, but my college aged kids still read them) Jordan is good, but there is a bit more suspense, so not good if he gets really upset if the main character is in “danger”. If you want a list of fun grade school level reading books, I could put my son on it… If you want them to be junior high level without any sex or mega violence, I can also put him on those. Crutcher, Jordan, and Jaques are the only authors that are above that level that I will let him read due to the nature of most books written beyond a 7th grade level. None of these have thrown in excessive violence, but Crutcher deals with topics your son would not yet be ready for… Anyway, I hope this helps!!! Rabecca Books Any ideas about books that are fiction where a character has AS, has read thru all the kathy Hoopman and Buster and the Amazing Daisy. He really needs soething at a higher level as these take about 45 minutes or so. He reads at a high level but we need something without sex or excessive violence. (he's 10 thinks sex is just about the grossest thing in the world) He dosen't get into the books just about AS but loves books where the main character is like him with different behaviors than the rest of the NT world, and it helps him come up with some unique coping stradegies. Guest guest
Playing, Lughing and Learning with Children on the Autism Spectrum by Moor, as well as The new Language of Toys by Sue Schwartz might give some good ideas for playing and interaction, especially with children at the early stages in communication development. Guest guest
Hi Vesna Just had a look at some books and The New Language of Toys was the one I was trying to fine. Then I remembered I have lent it to someone. Is that the book that has lots of activities based around senses? Lots of craft making activities? I am sure it is and its very good. Another book which I found useful initially is Small steps forward (Using games and activities to help your pre-school child with special needs) by Newman. Its quite like that other one and is very simple and easy to understand. Its not specifically for Autism but has lots of relevant ideas. Hope this is useful.
