Ginger for Reflux

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a good Christmas. Steph, I know things have been

rough this last week for you, and I hope things improve soon for you

all.

The reason I'm writing is that for some months now Jazzie has had

night time gulping and loud swallowing at night, which her GI says is

reflux. She was on omeprazole and domperidone, which slightly

improved things, but not much. I stopped the omeprazole without

noticing any worsening of her condition. She was facing a nissen

fundo op if things didn't improve.

I noticed the last few nights that her gulping had stopped and

mentioned it to DH, who replied " Oh that's the ginger you are giving

her in her pancake " . (SCD). He had spoken to his mam the other day

(she has been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and was also on

omeprazole). She bought herself an alternative treatment book, and

had started taking ginger after reading it should help, in a drink.

She has not taken the PPI for a week now, and has had no heartburn.

Coincidence?

If anyone is interested, I could post the pancake recipe. I have

also started giving Jasmine ginger in her diluted orange drink. I

warm it up and call it her " Christmas Special Juice " . She also

likes it cool, again with orange juice, and topped up with fizzy

water - Orange and Ginger beer!

With us though, it took a few weeks for it to work. MIL says it

worked after a couple of days for her.

--- Hi Caroline,

Yes, it has got good anti-inflammatories, so MIL's book says. I

presume its this action that's worked for Jasmine. I am so relieved

that her reflux looks like clearing up at last. I've been worried sick

about it since April.

And yes, Jazzie is still eating solid foods, yay!! She is mostly SCD,

however she still hovers badly behaviour-wise. Not as good as when

she was tube fed, but you can see the difference when we ease up on the

diet, she goes so manic. Non-stop talking, the same thing over and

over again!!! I let her have some chips the other night and I'm still

recovering from it!! It's Christmas though, so I haven't been as

strict as usual.

Best Wishes

--- Hi Vicky

Here's the recipe, it's very quick and easy:

30g ground almonds

5g honey

1 egg

A couple of good shakes of ginger powder.

Mix all together and fry very gently in pan. I use very little oil,

and I also use the grill to do the top of the pancake, before turning

over.

Top with more honey or ginger if desired.

Hope it's good!
