Used lavender oil in cleaning solutions for a while as its also antibacterial. WWII, lavender was the only disinfectant used and available in French hospitals. Noticed & now makes a nighttime baby bath with lavender. Have seen lavender filled sleep pillows. Wanita
Guest guest
>ok. ya know, i'm really really sleep deprived. so here we go. > >hops. gluten free? katjazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Yeah. They are a flower, and grow on a vine. The vines are REALLY EASY to grow, and quite pretty. The pollen (the part that makes the flavor) is sleep inducing, and if you put the hops in a stuffed animal it will put your kid to sleep (they sell " sleepy rabbits " that do that!). The folks who pick them have to wear masks or they fall asleep! Hops are decidedly narcotic (== sleep inducing). So your tagline is quite appropriate! They are also antibiotic, so I'm not sure weather to add them to kefir beer or not. Maybe AFTER I take out the kefir grains. -- Heidi Jean

Someone on the GF group talked to one company and though they *mostly* use rice malt, they also use barley malt. It's kind of sad, because it seems rice malt is the *cheaper* malt (as is sorghum syrup) but barley malt is still used in everything (even rice crispies ...). -- Heidi JEan
Guest guest
>Did you notice that the narcotic comment was in relationship with OIL? >Wonder if that is the distilled essential oil or an oil macerate. I don't know ... I've never bought the oil. What I noticed in my beer drinking days was that alcohol-free beer made me every bit as sleepy as " real " beer, but tequila or vodka did not. So I decided there must be something else in beer that makes me sleepy. Seems to be hops ... but they also say the infusion doesn't make folks sleepy, but, well, beer does for me! I'm not really so much into herbals ... I used hops for making beer and I have some in my yard (they are fun to grow), and I love my tea tree oil, but I don't know much about anything else. > Did you notice that JSWortham's links do not work? Guest guest
If I'm not mistaken, the question was do hops have gluten in them? No, they do not. They are the dried flowering part of the hop plant and the bitter quality in them is the reason they put them in beer. There are different varieties grown all over the world. Some of the best come from the Pacific Northwest. They definitely have soporific qualities. As far as rice beers go, from my understanding true rice beer would not have gluten in it. I'll see if I can find some of the recipes I have come across. I'll also consult my Malaysian friend who make her own plum wine.
Guest guest
hopss are fine for kids - and chamomile too. herbs for kids makes a chamomile hops tincture that's quite nice if you don't do it yourself... -katja At 08:59 PM 4/30/2004, you wrote: >What is the most powerful form of hops? Guest guest
Buy some vodka and throw some hops and chamomile in it for a couple weeks min. Shake it every day and leave it out of direct sunlight and you will get a much better tincture than anything you can buy in the stores. Valerian is a good one for adults but don't give it to the kidlets. We found out that it has the opposite effect on them. Fortunately I was in labor so it was no big deal that he stayed up until 6 am Valerian will not drug you...it helps you to slow down and drift into sleep. Any herbs can be thrown into vodka and tinctured. k Re: stupid, really stupid question: hops hopss are fine for kids - and chamomile too. herbs for kids makes a chamomile hops tincture that's quite nice if you don't do it yourself... -katja At 08:59 PM 4/30/2004, you wrote: >What is the most powerful form of hops? Guest guest
What are the amounts roughly? Then what's the best way to take the tincture? Guest guest
hee. amounts are so relative with herbs. in general i put in enough liquid to cover the herbs with a little extra for expansion etc. you can take the tincture just plain (in a dropper or a spoon) if you don't mind the taste, and if you do you can dropper it into water or tea or whathaveyou. Guest guest
Yes that is the best way. You can do a search on the net but it isn't rocket science...just throw the herbs in a jar cover with vodka (the herbs will soak it up some) and tincture. We bought fresh Echinacea one year and tinctured it...very good! It's been tincturing for 1.5 years now...quite strong...we just sick some off the top. I wouldn't waste money on store bought stuff. If you want a chamomile/hops you could do equal parts of the herbs and cover with vodka. In formulas the recipe is usually given in parts which you determine what the part is whether cups or teaspoons etc. There is a really good video set out by Debra Nuzzi...it's on Amazon used.... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0962381209/qid=1083691361/sr=8 -1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/002-9931688-6584835?v=glance & s=books & n=507846 It has 2 videos and a spiral book and will teach you all about making herbal stuff at home. A must have for anyone wanting to get into making herbal stuff at home...lotions, tinctures, glycerites, snuff and much more. kayte Re: stupid, really stupid question: hops What are the amounts roughly? Guest guest
I don't like vodka so I always take it in Orange Juice. Guest guest
I've read that hops were originally added to beer to prevent them from clouding and getting sour, and tastes became accustomed to this addition.
