Hey - glad you made it here :-) I just thought it was worth mentioning that your son is GF/CF (I think you mentioned that on the list, right?), because I know the first thing many folks will recommend is going GF and substituting raw milk for the soy milk. Heidi (a.k.a. " The Glutenator " -resident afficianado on gluten intolerance) will also probably ask if you are absolutely certain his diet is GF because there's a LOT of hidden gluten in many products. And she'll probably recommend taking a look at the " safe " and " forbidden " foods lists for the gluten intolerant on the celiac.com site (http://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=12 & sid=91hH9H0-I5EnCwz-521042604 59.89). You'd be amazed at how many foods contain hidden sources of gluten! Best wishes - I hope you'll find the info you need! ---------- Hey everyone - I'd also appreciate if you could help out - I sent her here from the Autism-mercury list. There's got to be some healthy alternative to chocolate soy milk, other than dairy? I think she's putting her son's CLO in it to disguise the flavor, but she can correct me if I'm wrong. She firmly believes that Omega3 deficiency is the major causative factor. You should also cut all sugar out of the diet, and I would recommend cutting out gluten also. Have you read Nourishing Traditions - if so, you will have read about the dangers of soy. There is a good summary of them in the recent archives of this list - if you search the name Groves (the author of the piece) you will find it easily. I will look for this there as well. Thank you Jo for helping me with this....Any comments are greatly appriciated. > HTH > > Jo

Guest guest
Hi Heidi, In the most recent newsletter from Dr. Mercola there is an article he posted by Dr. Blaylock, which suggests that HIGH doses of l- glutamine are not safe if a person is autistic. This also says this holds true in quite a few other conditions too. They are all listed. http://mercola.com/2004/may/1/glutamine.htm It was the first time I had read such a strongly negative review of using l-glutamine under certain situations. Apparently there is quite a lot of controversy around it's use. Blaylock is super careful. I remember reading his book years ago, " Excitotoxins:the Taste that Kills. It was a very interesting book. According to Mercola, Blaylock is highly respected in his field as a neurosurgeon. Anyway it is an interesting article and worth a look. Guest guest
So sorry for the struggles you are dealing with... Perhaps this is an aside, but I am wondering if any amount of neural re-development/re-patterning has been suggested? I bring this up because it was moms of autistic children who most closely related to struggles we were having with our young daughter regarding sensory problems (problems with textures, sounds, sensations, misperceptions of sensations, behaviors caused because of the onslaught of sensory info, etc.). We had our daughter evaluated and found out she is not autistic, but very clearly has sensory integration disorder. We received a plan of action from an OT, with activities and exercises that are supposed to help " re-wire " the brain to receive sensory input correctly. Some of these we have done, some we have fallen down on, but we see a marked difference in her behavior when we stick to our " regimen " . Activities like swinging, climbing, and jumping are crucial in my daughter's case. We have noted profound changes in our daughter with cranio-sacral therapy. Mothering magazine has long had great articles about autism, perhaps looking for back issues would prove useful. I remember reading an article some years ago about an autistic boy with intestinal constipation so bad that it mimicked loose bowels and was given numerous things to " stop him up " --during a treatment with a doctor in England the doctor correctly assessed what happened, and using laxatives the boy passed this blockage and had a resulting shift in his behavior. This is just one example of the perplexity of autism, but it was a fascinating article nonetheless. Has your son been vaccinated? I know this is a highly contentious issue, but I firmly believe with our ultra sensitive kid if we had vaccinated her she would have become autistic! Very good luck to you, Leann > > > > >. I haven't used it myself ... I have a hard time remembering supplements, but it does seem to have helped other folks. I did take enzymes for a bit, but then didn't seem to need them anymore. We pretty much have given up on packaged foods (the ones with excitotoxins) because 1) they don't taste good anymore and 2) it's too hard to figure out what ingredients are in them. Woman's World had an interesting article this week ... yeah, it's not a mag I usually read, but what was interesting is that they were talking about a book that recommends eating the " European " way ... fresh ingredients, whole foods, more fat ... as a way to lose weight. Wow, how radical can you get! Folks in France are a lot skinnier than folks in Texas though, and I can't say that they have any more willpower or self-denial! So I wonder if the current upward trend in Autism and Asperger's also holds true for Europe? If not, that could be really interesting ... -- Heidi Jean
