Guest guest
Hello all. I was wondering if anyone has done this. I am looking to completely revamp my son's diet, and alter my (and my dh's, when he's home to eat) somewhat as well. I've been struggling with what ds eats for about a year now, I realised today. Up until 18 mo., he would eat a lot of different foods, but now he's down to so few. I try to make them all healthy versions - no nitrates or hormones, organic if possible, etc. For awhile I had him eating these smoothies every morning (with lemon CLO, cream, sometimes nut butters with fruits for flavor) and he was doing better behavior wise and gaining weight after losing a lot with that terrible flu plus an abcess above a tooth and another brief stomach flu. But smoothies are now ignored for the most part. His taster is so sensitive, and he's also very picky about texture. I was skimming this book Carbohydrate Addicted Kids by Drs. and Heller. It's not a perfect book, by any means, a little dated in it's understanding of carbs and grains (like gluten issues, etc.). But it is a very warm and caring book by two doctors who have actually been there in terms of weight problems and emotional and mental struggles. Also, it has a few plans that seem implementable, laid out in a very clear manner, though less applicable to smaller children. The thing that really got my attention were these descriptions of different kinds of carb-addicted kids. One was called the " Fruit Bat, " and it was my ds to a tee. He lives for fruit, corn, nightshade veggies and any refined carb he can get his hands on. Not to mention the sweets I am constantly battling with him about at Grandma's house, and what he sees when we eat out at restaurants or go to the grocery store. I've taken him a few times to a chiropractor who is also a general alternative practitioner and uses cranio-sacral therapy. He has put ds on Bach essences, a microbial-balancing set of essences. He also tested his urine and said he is " definitely agitated, " due to a reading of the salt level, I think. (Like we didn't know that.=-)) He said that he needs more fats. I'm having trouble getting the essences in ds. If anyone knows of an alternative, information on this would be useful. Also, details about experience with cranio-sacral therapy would be appreciated. I know all this stuff. I've known all this stuff for awhile, but I've felt paralyzed about what to do. I'm beginning to think the only way I can change things is to cut all fruits, unless they're mixed with a fat/protein component and carbs for a period of time, except some sprouted grains. Has anyone done this? I wondering how many days we'll be hanging in there before he gets hungry enough to eat - he's 29 mo. now. I'm also wondering how I'll handle the in-laws and their inevitable opinions and the fact that their house is full of crap-food, and my son knows it. I could ask that they come to our house instead, though we usually do all the travel. (20-30 min.) Maybe if I made the point that I'm trying to change his diet and don't want to test him or my own weakness, they'll change things at their house. We'll see. They are great with him and love and treat him dearly, besides on the food issue. Thank you all for your input. Hopefully I'll be able to give back what I've gotten out of this group someday soon.
