hello I had a question. I am pregnant and trying to avoid all

supplements (including prenatal vitamins) I am trying to get

everything I need for me and the baby via FOOD itself. I know when

you're pregnant you need extra folate and iron. I tend to eat mostly

all carbs during the day to keep from feeling queasy, my question is,

can this group send me a decent list of FOOD SOURCES for iron.

I don't want to become anemic, I know my body is making lots and lots

of extra blood right now.

Peggy

p.s this is my first pregnancy!

Peggy,

What kind of carbs are you talking about? This doesn't sound like such a

good idea--I would make sure to eat plenty of protein and fat at all times

(day and evening). Meat is a great source of iron. You *might* want to

consider taking a folic acid supplement, or just upping your fresh fruits

and veggie intake.

ps-you're right to avoid supplements as iron in this form destroys vitamin

E.

I have a prenatal tea blend that I've used for the last two pregnancies that

I can feel a difference if I skip a day. If you are interested I can email

it directly to you. I also take folic acid in supplement form because of

the birth defects associated with not having enough folic acid. Also there

is a product called SuperFood. It's kind of expensive but I have that

recipe too. It is really good. When my ankles started to swell I started

taking it and the swelling went away. Really good stuff. Whole food and

herbs for ingredients that you can mix yourself and add to juice.

Rosemary Gladstar and weed are good authors that have some good herbal

recipes dealing with pregnancy. I believe one of them or both has a formula

for iron during pregnancy.

Legumes help a lot with folate, and something like lentils (soaked etc.) is

a good choice, I think. The problem with " carbs " is that this usually means

" high gluten " which is NASTY for your gut at this time, and prevents

you from absorbing the iron. That is what messed up my 2 pregnancies!

I think the slower transit times in pregnancy make wheat more of

a problem than it usually is.

Meat is good, and good for you esp. if you have a good source. But

morning sickness can make it unappetizing, in which case I'd go for

lentils (and lots of good spices). Potatoes are good too ... the Russets

are so high in iron that they turn BLACK if you don't cook them in time.

And a good batch of hash browns is hard to beat!
