Guest guest
I am a former camping enthusiast who hasn't camped since my first was born four years ago. We're determined to get back out there this summer with two kids in tow. My eating habits have changed considerably since my old camping days and I'm nervous about eating well while out in the wilds. Also nervous about feeding the little ones without resorting to junk food. I'm talking car camping here, but we do like more primitive sites. I have a big dehydrator at home so I'm thinking drying stuff, especially veggies would be good. Which vegetables work best for this? Sauerkraut should do ok in the cooler. I feel best eating meat at most every meal and I'm most worried about that -- esp. if we're out for a week or more at a time. How will we keep it cold? Do you just eat smoked and dried meat when you camp? Also, we're thinking of upgrading from the little two-burner stove and i'd like to know if you have an outdoor stove you like. Any and all suggestions, recipes, menus, etc. welcome!!! Please save us from falling back on Top Ramen! Elaine
Guest guest
--- Take the fermentable stuff and you hardly need a cooler with ice. Eat more raw foods as well. Don't go overboard but my opinion is using NT the cook/nutritionist doesn't cook, like on the stove, much. As someone here said, it's a soak, sprout, and ferment regiMEN (I had to get the gender thing in there). I probably left something out. Dehydrate fits in there someplace. How >will we keep it cold? Do you just eat smoked and dried meat when you camp? I make a great jerky ... the recipe is in the Files section! It keeps just fine. You can also brine meat and it will keep, or soak it in kimchi juice. But a bigger problem around here is bears ... bears LOVE campsite meat, and boy can they smell it. They'll tear apart the tent to get it! So you want to hang it from a tree away from you. Some people I know bring frozen meat in a freezer pack and cook it the first night, then use freeze-dried meals for the rest of the time. Depends what kind of camping you are doing though. Otherwise, I live off nuts and dried fruit when travelling. Pasta (GF) makes a nice meal, just boil it up. Some people add jerky to stews etc. for meat, which strikes me as real practical. -- Heidi Jean
