Waxes and oils all tend to create stuff in the air, which can be irritating, tho people have been breathing unburned hydrocarbons forever and somehow surviving ... it's probably more of a problem if you are prone to asthma or have just had a cold. But, if you burn a candle and it makes the air harder to breathe, you will probably know it!
