I started out with a 10-lb dumbbell, which is what was recommended to me. 10-lb for female beginners, and 20 or 30 pounds for male beginners. An equivalent weight KB will be harder to use than the dumbbell, I'm told. I'm initially using a dumbbell for the first couple of months. You improve a lot initially and outgrow KBs quicker at first. My husband is going to make our KBs later this summer when I work up to something I think I can use for awhile. Did you get the video? I got the other book and debated the video, but decided against it since it was expensive and just used the pictures in the book, but I'm wondering if I'm missing out on something. I've been using weights also. I just have the book....I've been wondering about the video too. If I get it I'll let you know if it's worth it. What's your husband going to make them out of??? I was disappointed that netflix didn't have the DVD. I only do two simple moves for now, but I'll probably need a video if I want to do the fancier moves. My husband is a hobbyist welder and metal worker and is going to make one set from a dumbbell cut in half. He's using a 30-lb dumbbell now and will buy a 60-lb dumbbell and cut the balls off and weld a u- shaped rod as a handle. The dumbbell we bought is roundish and will make a pretty good kb set, I think. The only problem is that he doesn't have much experience welding small rods to larges masses which he says is tricky. We'll have to use it outside a few times to make sure the handle will stay on. He's going to make an adjustable one also, out of a threaded bar (star-lock) so he can add however many plates he wants. He'll use when he wants to use an in-between weight to transition to a heavier kb. If you're interested, I'll let you know how turning a dumbbell into a kb works. If you don't know any welders, you could probably pay a vo-tech welding student a few bucks to weld one up – cheaper than ordering one.
