Guest guest
Inger, You are right. Hyperlexia is usually used to describe children with a vocabulary beyond their years. This of course includes using the big words properly, not just parroting them.

Guest guest
Hello , As far as I know and understood you are right about hyperlexia being the ability to use complex words in context, but not understanding them. And this would be in written and verbal. Kind regards, Lida hyperlexia? I still cannot get my head around hyperlexia, from what I have read I think it is a case of using complex words in context, but not understanding them - is this correct? Is it written, verbal or both?Kind Regards,FAM Secret Society is a community based on respect, friendship, support and acceptance. Guest guest
Is this not something that mainly pertains to children who learn to read " too early " or does this alleged difficulty continue into adulthood? Guest guest
Hello Inger, Yes, it would be something that mainly manifests itself during the learningprocess, but it can occasionaly happen again when older when a person is learning a new word. Guest guest
What I was finding hard to 'get my head round' was that if the word is used in context then surely it is understood?; but now I am not sure? > > Hello , > > > > As far as I know and understood you are right about hyperlexia > being the ability to use complex words in context, but not > understanding them. Guest guest
Hello , No, not always.. It is possible to 'guess' the right use of a complex word in its context, without really understanding it. Guest guest
Thanks, Lida. But that is something completely natural, isn't it? Why make a diagnosis out of a perfectly normal human trait? When I've looked at hyperlexia websites, all I see is a lot of typical ASD traits described. It is very common for Aspies to learn to read before by themselves/before they start school. How many here did? I partly did, with a little help and my mom's ABC book from the 40's. I was really itching to learn the words and kept nagging my parents to tell me what the letters meant. What I've been wondering is how it can be a disorder to learn to read early? And when one does break the reading code before one is old enough to fully understand what all words mean, isn't that perfectly normal too? I'm suspecting that they are pathologizing what may instead be a sign of giftedness (especially if one learns without tutoring) just because it's out of the ordinary. I'd be very interested to hear if anyone else here shares this view, or if it is I who am missing some information on this " syndrome " ?
