Guest guest
I just figured out that my dd is getting hives from her grandmothers boysenberry bush and that she is not being attacked by insects. She easily has 200 welts at a time all over her body, mostly legs and arms but some on her trunk. Does anyone know why this could be happening to her and if perhaps her gut is not strong and that is why she could be allergic to something? Thanks, Helen

Might be something in the berries, or the yeast that grows on them, or the mold that is usually on them. Or the sun ... I used to get welts from being in the sun (now I blame canola oil, I don't get it any more). Berries do seem to be problematic for some folks, my sister used to react to strawberries big time. Caladryl lotion helps with the itching though ... I also have to add that when I go berry picking I come back looking like I've been attacked by a feral cat! Perhaps your berries are " nicer " but being out in the grass (usually hip high, by this time of year) and amongst the thorns etc. adds all kinds of allergenic possibilities. I tend to think kids getting a good diet and lots of probiotics won't have so many issues. -- Heidi Jean

Guest guest
>Heidi, could gluten also be a problem. When people go gf don't their >allergies usually disappear? > >Helen They can disappear ... but often they get WORSE. At least for awhile. I started getting really sore knees when I ate corn, they got all red and swollen, something I'd never had before. My guess is that when you eat wheat and are gluten intolerant, the immune system is so overloaded it doesn't really work anymore, it just kind of ignores everything. When it heals, it goes bonkers. Anyway, a lot of people have described this problem while they are healing. Going GF didn't make me feel great at first, for the first week I felt like I got hit by a truck, I could barely move. Worse than giving up coffee! But the fact I felt BAD made me pretty sure it was a very reactive substance ... I can give up apples or oranges or eggs or beef for a week and feel no difference at all. Then a month or so later I got the joint pain, and started getting migraines 3x a week, and at one point I could barely walk for the pain. But believe it or not, I was FEELING better, chipper even! No depression, self-pity, or neurosis. So I can't say there is any one thing that will happen for everyone. I do think the general SAD diet, and gluten problems make the diet worse because of leaky gut and malabsoption, will make allergies develop where they wouldn't otherwise. The research seems to be pointing to bacteria being a big part of the issue ... if the gut isn't colonized by the right bacteria, people tend to develop all kinds of issues. OTOH, my dh and ds (who are hive-prone) have been hive free since we've been wheat-free. The one exception was when they got some contaminated food ... both of them broke out in a nice rash on their trunks, which worried me until I heard the whole story! -- Heidi Jean
