Guest guest
We have two family grain mills (I'm pretty sure that is what they are called, outside is made out of PVC pipe with wooden base that clamps on). One we use in the house for cracking oats. The other is in the barn for use for animal feed. It does grind very fine and is not difficult to turn. I also have an electric whisper mill. I think the electric mill is probably a little bit finer but the family mill was always fine enough for bread making. I stopped using it for flour because of the time it took to grind. It wouldn't be bad for a small family but with nine in our family, we use a lot of flour. The children would each have a quota of flour to grind and it worked pretty well except they put their grinding off until the last minute and I would have to wait for the flour and it held up baking. Guest guest
I don't think my mill grinds quite as fine as pastry flour. I don't have creaking or popping noises. Maybe slight creaking once in awhile. You could try taking it apart and putting it back together. Janet
Guest guest
Sorry I didn't answer about grinding corn with the Family grain mill. It is a lot easier with corn to crack it first, then run it through again to grind into flour. Janet
