Actually I find ours online, but a lot of people talk about it so I knew it existed. I googled under " auction washington livestock " or something like that. I think most states have them. Really, there is a whole " underground farming community " that still exists ... I try to support them (and to ignore the local mega marts) as much as possible. Seeing the range of animals there ... some of them were obviously sick ... makes me less and less willing to just buy meat in a package. A lot of the folks there were buying animals for the market (esp. the Mexican meat market, where goat is considered a nice delicacy) and the farmer I bought my last beef from was saying they will buy really sick animals to sell the meat. Also they told me that the " slaughter beef " were mainly old dairy cows or sick cows. Huh. Who knows what goes into your hamburger? Also, if you buy a whole cow and are there when it is slaughtered, you can walk away with a LOT of cow innards. Now you need an extra freezer for these ... we are talking a 55 gallon drums worth at least ... but if you are feeding a dog or chickens this is basically freebies. -- Heidi Jean
