Guest guest
....I've been wondering about my ds' (30 mo.) lack of interest in protein (and fat) food sources as I continue to try and reshape his diet. I wonder if his lack of interest in most meats and other sources of fats (which came around 18 mo.) has to do with some problem his body has processing them. Any opinions?... Hi Kathy, It can be the case that we drift away from things that don't agree with our unique metabolisms, but I think more often we get hooked on the things that aren't good for us - like high carb foods. What carbs is he eating? Would he eat protein ground up in other things. Would he eat things like chicken nuggets and fish fingeres (home-made)? Could it be a matter of texture? When my 2 boys were little, they wouldn't eat anything mushy on a spoon, but were OK with finger foods. We later realised that this was one of a number of autistic symptoms that they displayed. I would recommend that you make every effort to get him on the right track now, as I have learnt from bitter experience that the older they are the harder it is to change their diets. Cheers, Tas'. He gets bloated when he does eat it, and has lost a lot of his extra weight on a no-beef diet (they do eat pork though). Now, I tend to think beef is a good thing, so I was surprised to hear this ... but then ALL the beef they get is commercial, and the beef that really bothered him was Mc's burger patties (sans bun). My relative feels it is hormones in the beef ... I think she may be right, commercial beef tastes weird to me now, ESPECIALLY hamburger. Hamburger is often from used-up dairy cows, so it is very high in hormones and other junk. However, said person won't eat meat that isn't from a regular store (I could get her some GOOD beef easily enough, and we've argued about it enough, so don't bother telling me all the reasons she should switch, believe me I know!). So ... the first thing I'd look at is the source of the protein. A person can be allergic to protein sources, or they could be from a bad source. The next issue would be stomach acid and enzymes ... people who can't handle fats, in particular, are often low. That is often from gluten intolerance, but there can be other causes probably. Starting out with coconut oil and lower-fat meat seems to help, coconut oil is very digestible. As his digestion gets better he might be better with meat fat. HCL caps and enzyme caps really help a lot of people, as does eating salad or fresh fruit with the meat. -- Heidi Jean
