Guest guest
Charlotte, Autumn tried Zyrtec & Claritin & neither one of them worked for her. We finally went on to Atarax & have had much better luck with it. Keep in mind that Autumn doesn't have cvid, but she does have severe allergies & bad asthma. Also, she doesn't take liquid albuterol, but instead uses a nebulizer. The liquid albuterol is practically worthless to us. She took it when she was an infant & it did nothing for her at all. You might see if the doc will switch to another antihistamine. Tussi12 is a good combo med for drying up congestion--Autumn responds well to it when she's very sick. Right now her asthma & sinus drainage is very bad & we're using atarax 3 times per day. It seems to help quite a bit. Hopefully she'll kick this cough in another week or so. Hope some of that helps! Guest guest
Hi Charlotte, Thank you for the info. I spoke w/ a resident of Sydni's ENT and he increased her dosage to 1 1\2 tsp 2x a day. I think only for 5 days, though. She weighs just under 25 pounds. Does this sound right? You said Colton takes that once a day, and he weighs more. So far she seems ok. Very tired and won't drink alot. She isn't a very big water drinker, so I have been offering alot of watered down juice. Any suggestions to get more in her? How much is enough? I do know about the sun, eventhough we've had LOTS of rain! Augmentin has always worked great for her, it's too bad it's not good for long term use. Hope Colton's coughing eases up. I hate to hear that. It makes it so hard for them to rest well. Guest guest
You might try ice pops or icicles. When I'm worried about my kids getting enough liquid, that always works to get at least a few more ounces in them. Especially on a hot summer day. Getting one of those kids toys that makes shaved ice might work too. Usually kids will eat what they make themselves. Does anyone use cool mist humidifiers for coughs??? We really saw a difference during Sam's sinus infection when we didn't use it. He was having nose bleeds just about every night. Since he wasn't coughing as bad, I didn't think about the humidifier right away. I finally gave it a try and that night, no nose bleed. The next night I forgot and he had another nosebleed. So we started just using it every night. It really helped a lot. We just had to make sure to check the filter and clean the humidifier regularly. Good luck! Guest guest
We were told by Macey's immunologist at Duke that the risk for mold in the humidifier was too great. We had one in there up until then and were told to remove it. The nasal washes have helped more with dry and irritated noses. Guest guest
Our dr advised us not to use a humidifier because of the potential for mold growth. It's hard to keep it clean enough so that the mold won't grow in it. When we used a humidifer early on, Autumn didn't show any improvement. So, we stopped using it. We've never used another one because she does show some allergies to molds. Guest guest
dear wenoka, our dr. just told us to start using a cool mist humidifier so im gonna go buy one in the morning. she also told us not to use any type of fan in coltons room she says it dries out the nasal passage which causes nose bleeds. also you can use a q-tip with vaseline and swab the inside of there nose and it really helps nose bleeds. charlotte mother of brandon 15, jordan 11, and colton 2{cvid}

Guest guest
Thank you charlotte. That is a good idea! Eventhough she's only 15 months, I'll try a water bottle. She sees her sister drink from one so maybe she will too! Hope colton's cough eases up soon. Traci Hayli & Sydni's mom

Guest guest
Charlotte, Autumn is the one who uses Atarax for allergies. It's done a great job in controlling them. It is a stronger one than most, and can cause extreme drowsiness. Just a word of warning. It doesn't make Autumn sleepy, though. I have a friend who uses it for her son to control eczema & he is asleep an hour after taking it! Guest guest
Thank you Charlotte, Maybe Bacrim does come in different strengths? Sydni is not quite 25 lbs and gets 1 tsp, twice a day. It doesn't say what amount it is. The bottle says Sulfatrim suspension BDC . She also takes it for matenience. Sound right? Hope Colton feels better soon! Guest guest
DEAR TRACI, THE SUSPENSION ONLY COMES SINGLE STRENGTH. IT SOUNDS LIKE SYDNI COULD GO UP TO 1 1/2 TSP SOON. IM PRETTY SURE COLTON WAS AT 1 1/2 TSP. WHEN HE WAS 25LBS. BUT, IF ITS WORKING I WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT IT. COLTON IS ON BREATHING TREATMENTS 3 TIMES A DAY AND HAS MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN HIS COUGH. I BELIEVE HE HAS A SINUS INFECTION SO ILL CALL THE DR. MONDAY. HOPE EVERYONE IS WELL.
