Wow – going to Rep of Georgia?! How

in the heck did you/Rian arrange to speak there? I’m guessing your

daughter helped? Do they speak English? Have a great time!

Thanks for the update on your practice –

it’s good to hear.

Overdue thanks and an update

A recent

email from Honya Song had a 3 1/2 yr old email of ours

embedded in it, in reference to checklists. Just wanted to let other

new readers know so it wouldn't seem so confusing.

Update on our rural practice:

When I answered Gordon's request (even though it was really for

successful rural examples), I got rolling and pretty soon our ideal

micropractice sounded like gloom and doom, in many ways. When I

re-read it I just thought I should let you know that, truly, on a

day-to-day basis we are enjoying what we have created. Rian smiles and

laughs and is very content to be his own boss. He very much enjoys the

freedom to have longer visits. His patients often say how very

grateful they are for the style of practice that we offer (unfettered

access, same-day appts, etc.) We began with zero patients, in terms of

patient base, because he had been practicing 25 miles away (although

many of those have chosen to commute to our office). The income

figure I gave was probably from 2004. 2005 was better and I notice

that this year we are earning more than last. In fact, we have figured

that, even with the poor Michigan

economy, and the lower income of our

county, if we eventually increase to an average of nine patients a day

(which we actually have had, the last two weeks), I project that we'll

take home at least 80,000. And, since our two children have completed

their college years and are on their own, we would be content to earn

that because at age 54 our priorities have changed and I have learned

to be more frugal these past three years so a lower income takes us

farther than it would have in the past.

Thanks to all of you, but most recently, those who've helped us

include:

Seto:

thanks for continuing to update Gordon's cutting edge doctor list,

thanks for all your helpful links and thanks for letting all of us

know about Frappr - a site where we can all put ourselves on

the map!

Terry Merryfield

On another note, it is really hard to keep up with reading all the

emails but eventually we do. This Friday we leave to fly to the

Republic of Georgia for ten days, where our daughter

is serving in the

Peace Corps. This will be the first time that Rian has more than four

days off in a row (which he's had for Thanksgiving and Christmas) in

and state tax returns for 2005 turned out to be exactly what we needed

for both roundtrip tickets. The chimney at home is crumbling and the

walls need paint but we will get to see our daughter. Life is good.

Also, while we are there, Rian will be sharing information at three

different question and answer sessions with Georgian physicians and

other healthcare workers, just to contribute in some way.
