Guest guest
> oh come on elaine! you can too have a chest freezer. It's not the freezer, it's lack of space for one. We have a little upright freezer that has helped a lot but couldn't house a cow or half a cow. We were going to put a chest freezer on the porch but have learned that's a bad idea. Actually most cohousing communities have far roomier units than ours. We are a family of four living in 900 sq. ft. with no garage. No room for a chest freezer, trust me on this one. This place is fulled up. I have been thinking about smoking stuff but it is not a flavor i like. Maybe i could grow to like it. Guest guest
why is it a bad idea on the porch? we have ours in the garage, which granted, isn't quite the same as on the porch...but perhaps with a little enclosure built for it? salt curing? i don't like smoked either, unless it's bacon. Guest guest
Elaine: I feel your pain, we were a family of 4 living in a 740 sq ft house....it makes for a cozy family! Guest guest
We were told the temperature fluctuations aren't good for the freezer to maintain a freezing temp. Could get problems. It gets wicked hot in summer here but and is rainy and damp a lot too. We have a little upright >freezer that has helped a lot but couldn't house a cow or half a cow. We >were going to put a chest freezer on the porch but have learned that's a bad >idea. Why is it a bad idea? Ours is in the garage ... it makes a fine worktable etc. when not being opened a lot. As long as the rain can't get it, it's ok. Now the FRIDGE in the garage has problems with the temperature ... it gets too hot in the fridge when the outside temp is freezing, it's little brain can't figure that one out. I've known folks with their washer/dryer on the porch, seems to work ok. We get the same temp fluctuations, and our garage is unheated, but the freezer works great. I've had chest freezers outside all my life ... the only thing is, if there is a power outage, keep them closed. Also some of the new ones aren't good at freezing warm stuff ... you need to bury new stuff under frozen stuff. Yeah, lack of space is a pain. I'd recommend looking into a bigger place when you can. Prices go up ... our land is worth double what it was when we got it, but other places are still low. Moving to 5 acres, believe it or not, did NOT involve a much larger mortgage. -- Heidi Jean

Elaine>>>>>>> I was shopping at Lowes this week for a freezer, an upright Frigidare, and wondered about this also as the only place we have to put a freezer is the garage. The instruction manual for the freezer said that below 32 degree outside temps would not hurt the freezer's operation at all. It said there would only be a problem if the outside temps rose above 110 degrees - a possiblity in a Missouri garage if I did not keep the windows open.
