Guest guest
From looking at some of the EM literature, it looks like EM starter will contain 9 types of organisms (some yeasts, some Lactobacteria, and some PNSB). The " recipe " varies by manufacturer and region and country probably because Dr. Higa described that the EM could be created from combinations from a list 87 different organisms (up to several hundred), but always containing yeasts, LAB, and PNSB for a total of 9 organisms purposefully added to the EM starter. The purple non-sulphur bacteria (PNSB) seem to be found in EM but not Primal Defense although PD does contain yeast, LAB, and Bacillus. Dr. Higa claims that the core of EM's " magic " is due to the phototrophic PNSB bacteria due to their reducing or purifying capabilities (PNSB feed on waste matter). Strangely, the EM label only lists LAB, not the PNSB or yeasts. The specifications say 1 bottle of EM starter will make about 22 bottles of the extension brew. EM may be another powerful tool in its own way as is kefir and kombucha. Darrell
