I wanted to share my " duh " discovery about using ice. After years of struggling with store-bought leaking bags of ice cubes (_why_ do they put holes in the bags??), leaking " blue ice " bags and such, it finally dawned on me that those tall, square-ish 1-gallon water jugs with the nifty handles would make _fine_ home made ice blocks. They don't leak and when they do eventually thaw, you have cool drinking water from home. Any plastic water jug will do, but I like the ones with handles. Be sure to allow head room for the ice expansion when you fill. They're helpful for in-town treks too, not just for camping trips. I take a few in my ice chests when I go grocery shopping on hot days. They live happily in the deep freezer, adding thermal mass, in between uses. ....like I said, " duh " ..... :-)
