Guest guest
Hello and Diane, Yes I am still here. I have travelling a lot since July – France for a holiday, Copenhagen to teach feng shui, Corsica to provide more training and now just back from Michio’s eightieth birthday celebrations in Lisbon. Lisbon was wonderful. Still sunny, great food and the chance to reconnect with a lot of macrobiotic friends I have not seen for, in some cases, over ten years. It was also lovely to spend some time with my sister who I am sure will write more for this group. Lisbon is a fantastic place to visit if you are macrobiotic as there are many good macrobiotic restaurants and if you eat fish some of the best sea food in Europe. Saturday and Sunday attracted over three hundred people to talks by various teachers and Michio. I gave a talk on balancing the Zen macrobiotic traditions and philosophical origins with a more conceptual western approach. Perhaps there is room for another VeganMacrobiotics discussion here even though it is similar in essence to the ones we had on food lists. The basic point being that if we take Oshawa’s (often considered the founder of modern macrobiotics) original ideology that included non credo (non belief), an appreciation that everything is in a state of change and the cultivation of an attitude of appreciation, humbleness, emptiness and flexibility; to what extent should we believe our macrobiotic concepts? He made arrogance the top of his list of sicknesses. I am sure many will recognise aspects of Zen Buddhism and The Tao in Ohsawa’s writings. The basic idea with both of these is that if you belief in one thing you cut off your ability to be open to other potentially contradictory things making our lives more microbiotic than macrobiotic. The more conceptual we become the harder it is to be intuitive. Halsey gave an interesting and amusing talk on how people shop for nutrients rather than real foods. He described how as a nutritionist even he found it difficult to understand free radicals, omega oils, oxidisation and yet so many people go into a health food shop looking for antioxidants, omega 3, 6 or 9, along with a wide array of vitamins and minerals. He asked the question of how did people manage before all this became known, would it not be better to focus on real foods and real diets? Michio gave two lectures. One on the spiritual energy flowing through the cosmos and humans. The other was a rather gloomy look at global health, environmental issues, war leading to the conclusion that we are heading for catastrophe. Michio felt macrobiotics had something to offer on all these levels. On Monday he gave an interesting lecture to all the teachers, which included how to read people’s faces and see the energy of their home. On Wednesday Michio and his partner, Denny Waxman, Restrepo, Waxman and myself made up a panel to answer questions from macrobiotic students in Portugal. I followed some messages regarding different celebrities and macrobiotics. We have a macrobiotic shop, café and clinic in Kensington High Street, London and have many regular celebrity customers. These include Bill Gates, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Silverman, Boy , Clapton, Elle Macpherson, Cleese (monty python) members of Kula Shaker and Def Leppard along with other musicians, artists and actors. I know Madonna’s macrobiotic cook and she travels extensively with her. If anyone is coming to London let me know and we can meet up. All the best, Simon Simon G. Guest guest
Simon, What a wonderful summary of the trip to Lisbon, the celebration, and thoughts about Zen macrobiotics. It sounds like Michio gave some good talks, whihc perhaps also means he was in stronger health? Thanks for sharing. > >> > I must have missed an email somewhere. What is Simon's > > Modern Day Macro? Guest guest
Hi , Yes Michio looked younger than last time I saw him several years ago. He also spoke much more clearly than the times I used to invite him to London. I was very impressed. Michio has a lovely young Japanese woman looking after him and combined with a more restful lifestyle he seems to be in very good shape. I was happily surprised. All the best, Simon Simon, What a wonderful summary of the trip to Lisbon, the celebration, and thoughts about Zen macrobiotics.
