They will do to make several batches, but they are not the self-sustaining colony of real kefir grains. (Mercola also has this sort of starter available. His recent piece about kefir was so annoying -- it made it appear as if these packets were the same as the real deal...) The real grains are a one-time purchase (or a gift from a kefir veteran -- there are sources online where you can ask is anyone has spare grains to share...). Once you get them going, they just keep on giving and growing a bigger and bigger colony. Keeping kefir is really kind of cool -- sort of like being a farmer of a miniature crowd of " livestock " -- you treat them well and they will reciprocate.
