Stomach acid Question

Hi

As there seems to be a lot of people very knowledgeable about stomach

acid on this list, I hope you don't mind me posting a question on

behalf of my mum.

She has acid reflux, suffers from heartburn and related nausea

sometimes after eating and her doctor has just told her that she

needs to reduce the stomach acid level. She should cut out fizzy

drinks (no harm there IMO), but he has also prescribed 2 drugs:

1. Mopral, generic term Omeprazole, which stops acid secretion in the

stomach. This is used to heal stomach ulcers and other such

problems. Should not be taken in the long term.

2. Domperidone, which stops nausea and sickness. This states not to

be taken in the long term.

I have researched the drugs on the internet to try t okeep my mum

informed. HOwever, from memory of conversations here, I have an

inkling that decreasing her stomach acid is not going to be the best

thing for her in the long run. Does anyone have any thoughts about

this? Will these harm her, heal her, or just mask the problem for a

while?

She takes l-glutamine and zinc and pancreatin for her digestion (she

has long term digestive problems, and I buy her these) and these all

seem to really help her feel much much better - her skin is improved,

as well as her digestion. However, the Dr told her that unless she

takes the drugs he prescribed, she won't be cured.

Thanks for any insight

Jo
