hi,

i'm wondering if anyone here has experience with the specific

carbohydrate diet recommended in the book " breaking the vicious

cycle " by elaine godshall (sp?). a client is desperately trying to

heal her son's digestive problems (he's mildly autistic) with diet

and has come to me for help. i'm familiar with SCD and read the book

a few years ago but would love to hear from those who have used the

diet successfully or unsuccessfully.

or if it's been discussed at length already, please point me to it.

i did a search here first and came up empty handed.

thanks

I don't know how that diet goes for autism. The normal recommendation is to go

gluten-free and casein-free. I know there is a (or maybe several) lists

for that.

It could also depend on how mild the autism is. My son has been found to have

some characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome (AKA high-functioning autism). We

have been able to greatly reduce refined foods, colours, preservatives, etc. I

also noticed that 99.99% of his violent outbursts were when his blood-sugar was

low, so regular meals, reducing sugars/whites and balancing carbs with protein

and fat has really helped. I found out about going gluten and casein free after

we had made the other changes, and the changes we made were traumatic enough

because he was in a very bad way (behaviour wise) at the time. He's doing really

well now, and I'm sure he'd do even better without the gluten and casein, but I

think we'll leave it at that for now. I will soon be moving to a large block

where I can grow lots of food, including having a goat or two for milk, and will

be moving towards more NT food, so things should only get better.

Cheers,

Tas'.

hi deanna

i know that donna gates- the author of the body ecology diet is now focused

on healing diets for autistic kids.

she taught a workshop at the wapf conference, and it was taped..

maybe if you email them, you can get a copy.

-also, im sure if you can find donna, you will get lots of info.

Subject: specific carbohydrate diet - fermented veggies

Hi y'all!

I am wondering if any of you have experience with the specific

carbohydrate diet, especially concerning autism spectrum disorder

treatment. It is a gluten and grain free diet that restricts carbs to

monosaccharides, apparently. I am still researching. I haven't seen

anything on it from WAPF but thought you fine folks might have at

least heard something through the grapevine. Here's some general info

fyu:

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

http://www.pecanbread.com/

This diet is ruled by a matriarch, Elaine Gottschall, a MS level

biochemist. She has helped many with gi problems apparently, however,

there seems to be dogmatic elements at work imo with a dash of

pseudoscience mixed in. Then again, perhaps I am reading too much

into things.

So, specifically: Are lacto-fermented veggies (kimchi and kraut

mainly) a good substitute for yogurt and kefir for an asd juvenile

sensitive to casein? I realize the actual bacterial constituents may

be different, but isn't it good enough to substitute until gi problems

cease and dairy might be reintroduced?

Muchos gracias.

Deanna
