Guest guest
>>>Has any one heard of egg shell calcium? The way that you obtain the calcium from the shell is by putting an egg in lemon juice. The lemmon dissolves the shell and then you drink the lemon juice. Does this really work? Is it a good way to get some extra calcium?<<< I have heard of it. There was a bit of a discussion recently on another list I'm on. I'll ask for permission to cross-post and get back to you. It's not much but the second comment tells how it's done: My mother's Dr. wants her to start taking Fosomax but she doesn't want to. She's never done well on allopathic Rx's as long as I can remember. Anyway, he tried to convince her for a long time but different women in her building have digestive problems with it. I thought about good ole eggshell but just didn't know how it stacked up to the Fos.... or where to look to find this out. Looks like a good thing. I'll send this to her for her own peace-of-mind and so she can enlighten her Dr. *** XXX, your mother could also make her own calcium citrate if she wanted:-) She would place several clean fresh uncooked whole-eggs-in- shell in a glass jar and cover with fresh squeezed lemon juice. Refrigerate for several days -- checking daily. You want to whisk the eggs out while you can, if left too long and every bit of shell has been transformed, it can be hard to get the whole-egg-in- membrane out without breaking. Then just take a spoonful of calcium citrate a day as her calcium source, stirring beforehand. *** my Mom is really into your calcium citrate recipe. Knowing her, she'll have the whole building onto it. Guess they'll be having a lot of omelet parties with all those eggs floating around. She was trying to explain it to her Dr. (who seemed intrigued though looked miffed) and she forgot to take the papers with her. *** That's funny! Hope they all like lemon-flavored omelets;-)

Making eggshell calcium is much better than supplements, since egg shells also contain other nutrients. +++I suggest you make up severals days for your whole family at one time. I think it is close enough to measure doses of the lemon juice and eggshell mixture by 1/2 or 1/4 teaspoon (maybe a little bit heaping) for each person if the mixture hasn't been left too long so it has dried out. +++That way you can make up calcium for 1 week at a time. +++Keep the mixture in a covered jar in the fridge until it is used up. If it gets too dry you might have to make it up twice a week, or add a tiny bit of lemon juice. +++The body can only handle a maximum of 500 mg of calcium at any one time, so keep that in mind. Children who are on lower doses could take an entire days dose at one time if the total isn't over 500 mg. That would make it easier for you too. I hope that helps.
