Guest guest
I need assistance in home training for my son (age 26). He suffers from Reactive Attachment Disorder & possibly PTSD (although over many years has been diagnosed with ADD, OCD and everything but). After exhaustive research, I have learned that he could benefit from EEG training to increase the amplitude of lower-frequency brain waves from SMR to Alpha in the right hemisphere of his brain. Sebern Fisher has developed the " Fpo2 " protocol for this treatment. The electrode is placed under the right eyebrow, near the nose (Fpo2), uptraining frequencies in the alpha range. n Isaacs, PhD has used a protocol where he places the reference at Fpo2 and one active electrode at T3 and the other at T4, uptraining in the Alpha band with eyes closed. He has claimed success with this prorocol which seems to be extremely powerful in re- regulating affective function. He is also using another protocol : C3/C4/Pz SMR in " alpha-theta " style sessions instead of using conventional alpha-theta placements and uptraining with gratifying results. I have also read that there is a need to regulate the Right Orbito- Frontal Cortex (ROC). Would this be accomplished with the Fpo2 protocol? There are also suggestions that the right temporal-parietal part of the brain must learn to produce the alpha waves in order to lower the arousal in the right hemisphere. Then there is the issue of calming the amygdala (right prefrontal cortex?) All research has indicated a need to train Alpha in the right hemisphere areas. With this information in hand, I need to know what equipment & software you would recommend to begin this training. Do I need a 2- channel or 4-channel? We have a desktop computer that can be used for this training. As much as I would like to visit a professionally- trained individual for this work, it's just not financially possible and the commute situation is another issue. I am hoping that purchasing the equipment & carefully working with it, will be our best solution. I so look forward to positive results. Guest guest
Katydid(?) As with anyone on the list who has a specific situation like this to discuss, I'd be happy to speak with you by phone. You can e-mail me at pvdtlc@... and give me some times that would work for you to talk (please indicate where you live, so I can figure out the timezones) and a phone number where I can reach you. The call costs me nothing. As your experience indicates, the process of seeking a diagnosis can be frustrating and confusing--more than one might at first assume it would be if there were clear diagnostic criteria for the multitude of various mental health diagnoses. In fact, the behavioral descriptions tend to be a bit vague and they overlap tremendously. For this reason many people who get started training brains don't worry so much about the name of the problem but focus on the specific behavioral issues the client wants to change and the brain patterns that appear to underlie them in that brain. There are two main approaches to training. One, called the " recipe " system involved finding recipes for training (as you have done) that are reputed to result in certain outcomes. If the problems in your client's brains are close enough to the problems the recipe focuses on, you can get very good results. That's why people use those recipes. But there are also plenty of people for whom they don't work--or have negative effects. Fooling around with the emotional regulation centers in a brain that is already unregulated can create lots of unintended effects. Clinicians who are trained to work with these issues work very carefully with them. Parents who don't really have options other than doing it themselves should be even more careful. I'll be happy to talk with you about equipment options, etc., but I always try to make sure that people who are considering doing NF--whether professional or for their families--be aware that there's a lot more to training than just buying the equipment. You've obviously already done a fair amount of reading. And your post here suggests that you aren't planning just to jump in. If I can help, don't hesitate to write me.
