Happy chickens

On another note, I'd like to report that for the first time,

I really think we have happy chickens! I've experimented

a lot with chicken habitats, and while some have worked

better than others, this recent experiment seems to be quite

successful.

Historically, they have been in our garden area for a couple

of years, til we kicked them out this spring. We tried a chicken

tractor, but it was too small for them. They have been loose

in our yard, but we couldn't find their eggs and they, well,

made rather a mess of our sidewalk. Plus last year when they

were loose a coyote got 5 of them.

So, we made a 50x50x50 triangle in a patch of *forest*. You

know, I had heard they are descended from " jungle birds " but

I really didn't realize it until they got their jungle patch. They love

it! The coyotes can't get them, and they happily peck and scratch

and perch on the branches. The fact they are out of the open

sky seems to calm them down, and they really have no desire

to get out (they can fly over the fence if they really want to,

but they don't).

Anyway, I now realize the error of my ways! Forget about " pasturing'

chickens. You should " forest " them instead!

It's also good to have them in an orchard to clean up the fallen fruit and keep

the bugs away.

Cheers,

Tas'.
