Infant feeding + Iron

Has anyone following the baby feeding guidelines in the book? My son

is approaching six months and we are going to start feeding him some

solid foods. So far, we've tried avocado and egg yolk. Our

pediatrician recommends rice cereal since it is fortified with iron.

Has anyone skipped all forms of iron supplementation (including

fortified cereal), and used raw liver instead? Also, when is a good

time to start him on cod liver oil?

Thanks for any input,

Dan

I'm surprised no one else responded to this....

I have a almost 8 month old NT baby girl who is doing very well. I'm

going by NT and gave her raw egg yolk around 5 months or so...but her

gag reflex was still very strong and it was more work than it was

worth so she only got it once a week or so. Now that she is cutting

her first tooth, she is getting more solid foods (I've been strickly

breastfeeding her). Plain, raw, goat milk yogurt has been good.

I've used some raw goat cheese mixed with egg yolk and high vitamin

butter (talk about nutrient dense!). And I just figured out how to

get liver into her....pureed fresh figs with finely grated frozen

chicken liver mixed in. She liked it. I'm going to get as much

liver in her as possible since I know how good it is. She has not

had any problems with anemia at all even on just breastmilk.

How is your baby doing? I'm so thankful I found NT before I had my

baby. She is happy all the time, sleeps great (but still nurses at

night these days..) and is so dang cute! She is already crawling and

pulling up on furniture.

My daughter is ten months, and I started giving her the egg yolk at

around seven months (unlike Sally, who boils the whole egg and then

tosses the white, I separate the white from the yolk right from the

beginning and then heat the yolk minimally in a bain marie - it's much

easier that way I found). I also tried some other common baby foods,

which were a total disaster for her (mostly potatoes and bananas).

She really likes liver, eggs, cheese, yogurt, apples, prunes, green

beans, and zucchini. I try to give her the liver about once a week

now (I lightly saute it in butter and cut it up as finger food). At

the beginning I gave it more regularly, but I try to give everything

in moderation now. With our food sources being so contaminated (even

organic ones), I think it's best to not load up on anything. I try to

rotate the foods I eat as well (fish one night, then beef, chicken

etc.). Sometimes when it comes to feeding babies we all get really

crazy because you want them to have the best. I find that the most

important thing is just trying to be relaxed and calm.

I'd love to exchange more ideas and tips on feeding babies in the future!

Beck + Dawn - thanks for sharing your experiences and ideas!

My son Adam will be six months old next week. He's got 2 teeth

already. He's a great kid - people comment that they've never seen a

baby smile so much - they also ask " Does he ever cry? " (we'll, that

was before the teething started!).

I've been feeding the egg yolk raw. Should I be cooking it?

A lot of people (friends/family) get excited about giving the baby

different foods - including pop, candy etc!!! That comes to a shock

to us. Why do others want to give our baby anything??? Have you

experienced this - other people trying to give your baby food? I

know I have to relax and not be to uptight we feeding the baby, but

I don't think processed sweets should enter the picture!

Also, I enjoyed the recent discussion on what to do about the 1st

birthday cake. I haven't decided yet, but I might make a muffin that

looks like a cupcake with butter " frosting " - or something along

that realm.
