I need some advice. I checked my kombucha this morning, and when I lifted the

towel, two fruit flies flew out. I don't know whether or not I need to throw

out the everything or if I should use it...

Any thoughts?

I recently had this fruit fly problem due to some over ripe pears in

my kitchen. I only saw one fruit fly fly out of the kombucha jug when

I removed the cloth. I figured he or she didn't drink all that much;-)

and if there were any eggs left in the liguid they would be eaten by

the kombucha. I have been drinking it and I'm fine.

The fruit flies LOVE kefir beer, and I've found a " water lock " does wonders.

It's a cork with a plastic thingie on top that allows air to go out

but the bugs can't get in. Costs a couple of bucks at a beer supply store.

You'd have to cut a hole in a bigger lid though, for kombucha.

For making vinegar I use a " sun tea " jar though, and glued some flannel

over the opening in the top. Flies can't get in, and I can pour the vinegar

out thru the spigot at the bottom (which is plastic, but there is very

little contact with the vinegar). You can also just use the metal ring that

comes with mason jars and " screw down " a piece of tightlywoven cloth

over the jar ... that keeps the beasties out! Those little flies can just

get thru the tiniest holes!
