I don't know what tar *does* but my mother was a nurse, and described (at

dinner,

usually!) how smoker's lungs looked. Which is probably why I never took

up the habit. Also I knew an airline pilot (before smoking was banned from

airlines) who told me that new airplanes leaked, but they didn't worry about it,

because after a year or so, all the leaks were plugged by tar from the smokers.

(and of course I make the caveat that all these were commercial cigarettes, I

have

no idea about natural ones).
