Although, while it's statistically true, it absolutely hasn't been true in my personal experience, so it's hard to wager a guess. My mom smokes, and nearly all the girls I hung out with as a teenager smoked. A lot of girls in college smoked, and in my current work environment there are no women to be seen! (and *everyone* smokes!) Smoking increases androgen levels and acts as an anti-estrogen, but I doubt that underlies the gender difference. Could just be cultural? While perhaps women are as likely as men to become addicted to the chemical additives in cigarettes, they certainly are few women who truly enjoy a pipe or cigar. In fact most detest it. While to many men a good smoke is almost a religious experience. I think, don't know, one would find this across cultures. -Joe

I suppose what you mean by that phrase is less apparent to someone who smokes neither cigars nor pipes! I'm going to see if I can get some Backwoods tonight to try. Three-day weekend. Been working 10.5 hour days-- I deserve a cigar! ;-) Chris

While I'm sure the numbers are still dominated by men, ever since the big cigar craze lots of women have taken up smoking. When I went to the Big Smoke put on by Cigar Aficionado, there were LOTS of women in attendance puffing (and eating and drinking) away.
