Guest guest
OK, I said awhile ago I would try this, and I finally did, and wow, is it good! I boiled 3 quarts of water with 1.5 cups of molasses. While it was boiling I put in a couple handfuls of fresh hops. Let it boil 20 minutes or so, then added another handful of hops. Most of it I put in a gallon container with some kefir grains. The rest I put in a jar with a pinch of yeast (with the lid a little loose). Both of them are fermenting very slowly, much slower than usual for beer. BUT ... I tasted some today (the one with just yeast) and it was great! Like a nice sweet porter. And it's only 2 days old. Oh, and yeah, molasses is high in vitamin K. Given that the porter I used to make took all day and about $40 worth of ingredients and took a couple of weeks, this is just soooo easy and nice. The hops make all the difference though ... when I used just molasses it didn't have that " beer " taste. I think you could use some nice roasted grains (or coffee) for added flavor too, like the regular porter makers do. Heidi Jean
