RE: probiotic supplements

>>>Six months ago I visited my ND to fix my digestive system and basically get

me on

the right track nutritionally speaking (after that I learned about NN, NT and

WAPF and

have taken myself much further in the right direction). One of the things she

did was

put me on probiotic supplements (PhytoPharmica's 'pearls') for three months.

Then

she said I should only take them before, during and after taking antibiotics

(for

surgery or something like that). But THEN I heard that I should be taking

probiotics

every day (the person who told me takes Primal Defense every day).

Does anyone have any ideas? Probiotics every day, or just on " special

occasions " ?<<<

If you're following the recommendations of NN, NT and WAPF and eating fermented

foods every day, you'd be getting lot's of probiotics, anyway.

Cheers,

Tas'.

, what do you think about taking probiotic supplements along with

antibiotics

after surgery? Or more specifically, what do you think about taking antibiotics

for

minor surgery that can be done in the doctor's office? I'm getting a cyst

removed from

my head later this month (local anasthesia, one or two stitches) and want to

make

sure I'm doing the right thing for my health! Any insights would be most

appreciated!

Personally, I wouldn't for fear of candida, etc, but how is your immune system

at the moment (with regards to the cancer/treatment)? A healthy person shouldn't

need it (for minor surgery, at least) - assuming the doctor uses sterile

equipment, etc. - but if your immune system is already compromised, it could be

a different matter.

My immune system is not too bad at the moment, definitely on a steady incline

since I

went " native " about three months ago and I'm slowly (but surely!) incorporating

more

NT and WAPF ways of eating/preparing food. I ended chemo/radiation in the summer

of 2002 and quit tamoxifen three months ago. So, though I feel pretty good, I

can't

say for sure what's going on inside.

Thanks!

P.S. What does Tas' mean?

Hi Selena,

I never heard of antibiotics being given after a surgery. Did the doctor

recommend it? It seems to me that if the operating environment is kept

clean, you shouldn't have to worry about that. But I could be wrong.

If you do take them, I'd recommend waiting for a few days after you stop,

to give the antibiotics a chance to clear out of the body, before you take

the probiotics. Otherwise you'll just kill them off.

I've been taking probiotics every day lately, twice a day. I seem to be

doing considerably better lately, so I've ventured into a few foods I

haven't eaten in a while. Sweet corn and popcorn in small amounts, every

other day, doesn't seem to bother me at all. Same with small amounts of

watermelon.

I also started using oil of oregano. The darned stuff doesn't mix with

water, it just floats. I stir it up to disperse it over the surface and

slurp the surface liquid first. The oregano oil really burns my throat.

I wonder if it would work to mix it in with olive oil instead of water?

At least it will mix with that.

Dear Selena,

>>>Does anyone have any suggestions about taking probiotic

supplements along with antibiotics after surgery? Or more

specifically, what do you think about taking antibiotics for minor

surgery that can be done in the doctor's office?

==>It seems the medical profession is running scared regarding

infections and IMO are over prescribing, mainly to cover their

own " you know what. " Did you know that when antibiotics first came

out they were coated with nystatin; because " they knew " it caused

yeast overgrowth. lo?

I had 12 teeth removed under anesthetic at one time, but I took no

antibiotics or pain killers and my dentist was amazed at how fast I

healed and asked what I did. I took mega vitamin C, B complex, vit.

A, E & D and cal/mag. In any case I believe you heal faster without

antibiotics and pain killers. My daughter did the same as I did

after having her appendix out, and again she healed so quick the

doctor was amazed.

Garlic and cloves are also great healers.

If you do take antibiotics, take probiotics the same day but about 3

hours apart from the antibiotics.

>>>Also, does anyone here take probiotic supplements every day, or

just as needed?

==>It is recommended you take probiotics every day. I do. The idea

is to kill candida every day and also consistently plant good

bacteria every day. Probiotics are taken at different times and

usually alone (about 1 hour before meals, or 3 hours after meals)

four times a day and at a different time than antifungals.

If you can get a chance read my article (in the Files on our left

side-bar) which had a lot of information about antifungals and

probiotics.

I hope that helps you Selena.

The best to you,

Bee

Hi Selena,

If I were in your shoes I'd be loading up on probiotics and probiotic-rich

foods! I'd get Primal Defense ASAP and consider brewing AEM, which is a home

brewed probiotic drink with a similar microbial profile to PD.

If you take antibiotics for your surgery, be sure to take probiotics several

hours later (so that the antibiotic doesn't destroy the probiotic).

Thanks, Irene. I tried it with olive oil (3 drops oregano oil to a

tablespoon of olive oil) and it actually worked quite well. Tasted a lot

better and didn't hardly burn my throat. I still smelled like a salad for

an hour, though ... :-}

Hi Zack and Selena, It's been my (bad!) experience that hospitals, as a

matter of course, regularly give out antibiotics after hospital stays or

even after light " day " surgeries. My neighbor just had a face lift and was

given a two week course of Cipro " just in case " she picked up an infection

in the clinic.

All the troubles that led me to this fine group of Candida overgrowth

sufferers started with a hospital visit where antibiotics were given in the

drips and then another batch given when I was released and then yet another

two batches soon after my release when they discovered what kind of bacteria

I'd been infected with. (Of course I didn't know what I know now and

actually trusted the doctors.) Antibiotics are given out like candy to cover

their a--s in case a patient gets infected. Shame on them! ~Robin

Oh. And I agree with Zack. Wait until you're finished with the antibiotics

and then within a day of the last pill I'd start taking probiotics and

eating yogurt and other fermented foods throughout the day for at least a

few weeks. You should be fine. ~Robin

Thank you very much. I've used Glutapak R inpatient but it is quite expensive

and wanted to find something easier to find and more economical. I appreciate

your help and i'll definitely look into it.
