Guest guest
This seems to be a very common problem with our kids. Whitney doesn't have a lot of problems but constipation is one of the ones she does have. She would probably shoot me if she knew that I am telling this. She has had constipation and soiling problems for years. Her stools have been enormous in diameter -- thought she would stop up the toilet! I read somewhere about Miralax (prescription) and started her on that last summer. The recommended dosage gave her diarrhea but we now give her 1/2 teaspoon a day in water and 2 Citracel tablets for fiber. Over the past few months, her colon has apparently decreased in diameter as she no longer has enormous stools or holds movements for days. She still seems to have occasional problems with recognizing the urge -- but even this is much better. We didn't properly address the problem for so long that I think she had lost a lot of the nerve sensations and it has taken a long time for things to come back to a normal state. I had to be adamant with the pediatrian to get the prescription for Miralax as he was unfamiliar with it. I added the Citracel on my own and intend to eventually phase the entire regimen out, if possible -- but I think she will need at least another year of help. I don't know if has any problem with aspiration but mineral oil is a real problem if it is aspirated. I can understand why the doctor wanted to start on it but it is not good for long term use. Also, some vitamins cannot be absorbed when using mineral oil. It is very hard to regulate the dosage of mineral oil and you tend to end up with oily, orange yuck that the kid has absolutely no control over. Good luck. Vicki (mother to Whitney, 14 years old, SBH, etc. -- Depakote, Zonegran) Its been a while I haven't even been lurking I need some help Ok I feel bad I haven't even been lurking...Some times I just want to runaway from this life and forget I live it....For those of you that are new welcome I just know that you will love this group they are great...And for all the birthdays I have missed a great big happy birthday to you all....I need some help with any ideas with constipation for who will be 17 in a few weeks He has been suffering from constipation most if not all of his life..Ok where do I start I took to a new doctor the other day our old doctor was...well not the best.... but I have had a hard time finding a new doctor between insurance and being in a small town...This doctor is going to have me start andrew on mineral oil after a enama that I will be doing today wanted to stay at his grandmas after the appointment and I just couldn't say no.... Well anyways, has this worked for anybody else if not what has worked.. does poop he does not bleed he has a very large stool 1 to 2 times a week... Before was diagnosed with pachygyria (at 14) he was diagnosed with cerebal palsey and that was the reason they said he was constipated due to the muscles not working properly just said to give him fiber..... well I have done fiber, stool softeners and as of late milk of magnisia sp? nothing seems to making him poop good.... what really got me worried was after almost a whole bottle of milk of magnisia it didn't change anything..If nothing else please pray that I can get this kid pooping in the next two weeks I have told all his doctors about his constipation and they have all kinda blowed me off for the last 16 years and now this doctor has got me so worried I can't even sleep...Sorry for the book long post actually I could add more but I type to slow to sit here for the whole day..... Guest guest
I don't know if I missed the initial post about 's constipation or if he doesn't take real food, but I have always given prunes and/or prune juice for constipation. Within a day or 2, the constipation resolves. I would imagine you've already tried that, but just in case. . . Good luck. - Bivens mother of
Guest guest
If the little guy is very uncomfortable and the flax seed oil is not doing the trick, go for a saline enema. One minute of discomfort, and then he's feel much better. The flax seed oill can then work as maintenance.
Guest guest
Randa, you could try digestive enzymes, which help her better digest her food, and probiotics, which put the good bacterias in & push the bad ones out. I swear by both of these cause they have helped me & my daughter tremendously. Whit was always constapated & her stomach always hurt. But not any more. I had severe acid reflux for 9 years, but its gone now, and all I take are the probiotics. If I get constipated I take 1 of Whits digestive enzymes, and it usually works within an hour. Alot faster than laxatives! If you do try the enzymes, start really slow, and on a day when you will be close to a bathroom. Robin
Guest guest
my daughter has been constipated always...if you arent ready for the wfgf diet you can try high fiber. my daughters GI said it will usually wipe out any problems as long as you continue. you cant just give her a bran muffin and call it a day. Gerber makes fruit boxes...the apple-prune one is great for constipation. you can eat it by itself or mix it in oatmeal...you can try it in a fruit smoothie too. Starbucks has a really yummy banana bran muffin too, for those picky eaters. aimee mom 2 ella novemberxf <no_reply > wrote: My 3 year old daughter has always had trouble with constipation. Guest guest
Randa, My daughter has had trouble with constipation for a long time and it was so bad and she was backed up so far that it pushed on her bladder and caused her to wet her pants. Our urologist told me to keep away from anything constipating ( cheese, rice, bananas, etc) and she takes the Benefiber powder everyday. I really like that because you mix it in with a glass of juice or in a 1/2 cup of applesauce and there is no taste change to what ever you mix it in with. Also I try to give her high fiber foods as often as I can. I have noticed that she goes everyday now and we had an x-ray done before she started the Benefiber and it showed how backed up she was and then about a few months later we had another one and it was amazing how much had been moved out. She hasn't had an episode of wetting pants for a long time. I think that they make a chewable Benefiber tablet now as well, but we like the powder so we haven't tried that yet. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Amnesty, you are such a great resource My little ella has been constipated forever...im scared to put her in gfwfcf diet, but i am also scared not to. She and dad have lots of tummy problems...no dairy, no soy, no nothin it seems. she hates the rice and almond milk...her and dad drink goat milk which they both love...but i know it has casien. help.? right now ella eats wfgf waffles for breakfast, pb n j for lunch, oatmeal for dinner and some snacks...she wont try anything new...its impossible. That's what I do with my son, he's got a bunch of food allergies, including dairy and soy at one point. Although probiotics and enzymes are safe, it is always a good idea to check with your dr before giving any new things! Guest guest
Randa, This sounds like my daughter at that age. For , now 7.5, the constipation only ceased when we removed dairy from her diet. No more stomach aches and waking up with gas pains. May not be the answer for you, but it is one thing to consider. best of luck, joan > > My 3 year old daughter has always had trouble with constipation. Guest guest
Joan, By removing dairy, does that mean that you avoided milk, cheese, ice cream etc. or does that mean that we have to look at the ingredience of every lable? Did you use soy or rice milk? Our daughter if off most dairy, but still drinks milk. We started giving her soy milk today. She doesn't eat cheese (maybe a little on pizza but we have pizza only once a month) and no ice cream or yogert. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions so far. Guest guest
Randa, This was my dd exactly as you describe. She was constipated chronically for years. The best book on digestion and autism that I have read was called Enzymes for Autism and Other Neurological Conditions by DeFelice. I would HIGHLY recommend reading this to understand what is going on with her and what you can do practically to help. My doctor was no help at all in this area. It turned out that when we ran a complete GI panel (stool test) she had major intestinal inflammation (from vaccines) and low pancreatic function. What helped my daughter was: #1 Houston Enzymes, especially Peptizyde for dairy, gluten and protiens #2 Magnesium supplements #3 occasional use of Benefiber available at drugstores. It dissolves completely into juice and isn't gritty Serena > > My 3 year old daughter has always had trouble with constipation. Guest guest
If you bug them enough, they will often run the tests just to shut you up, that's how I got tests done for my food-allergic son.
