Go to dell.com and talk to someone in their "outlet" department. They offer refurbished products with a warranty which should bring the price down alot.

I just purchased a new computer (desktop) at Office max and was very surprised at the low price even though it had 4 GB of Ram and 500GB of memory with a 19 inch monitor for $479. So there are some good deals out there right now. Cherie

Dear Listmates:

I've just priced a new (Dell) laptop with pre-loaded XP (and Vista) operating system and with an installed dedicated graphics card and was very surprised to learn that it would cost me about $2100.

And this was a sale price!

Are there less expensive alternatives out there?

Lenovo offers an xp laptop for around $600 on Tiger Direct. You're right. Finding xp on a laptop is gettingmore difficult.

HI ,

I understand that there is a way to

configure Vista as XP. The machine I have had

it done because the folks over at Brainstate didn’t want to modify their

stuff to be Vista compatible and had all of

their vista machines configured to run XP. I wouldn’t even know if I had

Vista. However, it is likely that it was

configured that way upon installation. I imagine the Microsoft website might

explain how to do that. Happy Holidays all. Jeff

Jeff, Thanks for letting everyone l know! I have delayed purchasing a new laptop....trying to find all the features I wanted among the limited xp choices. Now I can just check out the Microsoft site to see how

My other question concerns DVD's. Do you know if a dedicated graphics card can be installed in a laptop computer (like extra memory) -- or do I have to buy the computer with a preinstalled card?

Most Multimedia laptops have good video

cards installed. I would stay with the ones most commonly purchased. I have

seen issues with the NVidea card installed on HP’s. Fir instance Wild

divine wont run well on it and there is no fix currently from either Nvidea or

HP or wild divine. J
