Guest guest
I'm in the process of trying to do this. The idea came from the helpline worker at the Challenging Behaviour Foundation. Do ring them! They have a leaflet and other materials on line. Also they can send you (free) DVDs. they contain helpful information. I also bought a book " Challenging Behaviour " CUP by Emerson et al. - costs £40 but I paid £32 because I get a discount from this publisher's bookshop. I could lend it to you but only for a couple of weeks as I really do need it. The book is v. useful as it tells you what a functional assessment and a functional analysis is. Also shows how wide challenging behaviour is – useful. The book focuses on severe LD – again very useful and makes a nice change from reading books which ignore autism with SLD. I then got an appt with local CAMHS LD people who tried to put me off. They said they could do ABC charts. I said but there's much more to a functional assessment than ABC harts (and showed them the chart on the book). I also said that Emerson said while ABC charts were easy to do the evidence was that they were unreliable. After 1 1/2 hours the upshot was that the psychiatrist was going to look into a referral. A letter was written and now it's up to my GP to secure the funding. It seems that Cambs and borough NHS Trust (the mental health trust) has no budget of its own - they just get commissioned to do a few things by the local PCT. The local PCT says they don't have a contract with the Maudsley) although PALS told me they do!). So it looks like it is now a matter of getting exceptional cases funding. Once the funding is on place it's a 10 weeks wait for the first appt from referral. GP wanted more info why referral necessary. I outline his SIB and other challenging behaviour and also made the point that if we couldn't sort out the challenging behaviour then he would have to move to a 52 week placement.I am seeking a referral to the LD service of CAMH at the Maudsley. The autism CAMH service is for higher functioning children and YP. So watch this space... Guest guest
PS I know it's OCD you are worried about but it probvably leads to challenging behaviour! Don't know if they have a specialist OCD service but I think the LD service would be the right one for ?
