I'm back...after completing four more batches using the advice from EW re

sterilizing and Melody to use a different container (colander) to try to sort

out why my broccoli sprouts are turning brown. Sorry this message is so long.

New batches 1 and 2 were the above. Both turned brown during day 4 (and

generally stopped growing). This used up the remainder of my original organic

seeds, and I did concentrate more on drainage in case excess moisture.

New Sprout House organic seeds were new batches 3 and 4. On batch 3 I decided to

shorten the rinse/drain cycle to every 8-10 hrs instead of 12 hrs. I lengthened

the time for draining, and spread the seeds up the sides of the Easy Sprout so

the thickness of sprouts wouldn't be as great, added another fan to the area and

set the container more at an angle like with a mason jar. More brown sprouts,

but they did grow a little more vigorously than the previous batches. Made sure

to keep the sprout mass separated.

For batch 4 I left the exterior solid container off entirely and either offset

or left off the top cover for additional ventilation. They also seemed to grow

better, but by mid day 3 there was enough mass that I decided to separate into

two containers. Both of these were browning during day 4.

I didn't want to spend any more money on supplies until I found out if I could

do this...but MELODY - I watched (among others) your video of rinsing and

draining about 5 Sprout Garden trays, and this looks much less labor intensive.

Do you do the same type of basically just dipping and draining as in the video

with broccoli sprouts? I don't know what my problem is with this Easy Sprout

device, but I'm frustrated with fooling with it and am determined to grow

broccoli sprouts one way or another.

Again, I'd be grateful for any and all advice.

One thing I don't think I asked earlier. Do you separate your broccoli

sprouts with a fork at every rinse. This is important I think for all

brasccas.

Yes, I did. One thing I noticed compared to the SproutPeople instructions was

that I have only seen the teeny root hairs once. SproutPeople indicate this

happens around day 3 when the sprouts are almost dry. This kind of leads me to

believe that the problem may indeed be related to excess moisture or not enough

ventilation, etc.

I can't figure this out either.  If the collander has big holes could drain off

too easily maybe and could get dry.  I grew a mixture in my round trays and

also in Easy Sprouter (like a shake cup in plastic with the slits on the top).

I used a 3 and 5 seed mix and I didn't see any that didn't sprout.  Did leaves

come up on the sprouts?  I'll have to get just some broccoli sprouts so I can

separate them from others to try this.

Ah, if you are using the Easy Sprouter they really get crammed in there and it

is not easy to separate them all unless you put fewer in there.  But you tried

The holes aren't big. I've been checking visually and by touch every 2-3 hours

in the last two batches. The only time I've noticed much dryness (and some

curling up) was one time overnight on about a teaspoon. I just threw those away

and rinsed the rest. I'm thinking if these Easy Sprouts are so sensitive to

moisture (or whatever), maybe I need another method. And no, I didn't try jars,

because I tend to break things.

EW,

I put 2 tablespoons of seeds in the Easy Sprout, set it at an angle for 5

minutes or so, then shake. I'll try it again with just 1 tablespoon of seeds.

Thanks for reply.

are designed to drain with very little help. On the Sprout People video you see

Gill shaking and shaking it. I have found that that is really not necessary.

Hold the sprouter at a slight angle for a couple of minutes and the water will

drain out. I never put more that two tablespoons of seed in a cup at one time. I

have found that over crowding the seeds cause lots of problems. I have 10 cups,

and am very happy with them.

One question. Have you used the same batch of seeds for all 6 previous times you

sprouted? I know you are now using spring water.

If you used seeds from the same container and you got the same result and on the

7th time, using spring water, you get brown sprouts again.

well.... in my humble opinion, IT'S THE SEEDS. lol, not you

there!!!!.....give em another try....perhaps w/ new seed or better

ventilation.....if you can.....after rinsing and getting off excess

water.....take the inner cup out w/ the seeds and let that stand on it's

own....better for ventilation and drainage.....
