Guest guest
Hi all, Just wanted to let people know that Prevnar is not marketed or approved for the prevention of ear infections. Prevnar is a new vaccine that has recently been approved for prevention of invasive pneumococcal diseases, including meningitis in infants and toddlers. Prevnar targets the most common seven strains of pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae) that account for approximately 80% of invasive disease in infants. However, there is preliminary evidence that it might also fight ear infections caused by the same bacterium, formally called Streptococcus pneumoniae. According to one study, the vaccine reduced ear infections by 9 percent. But the FDA has cautioned that so far the vaccine has been proven to prevent only meningitis and blood poisoning. Anything that helps with infant and toddler ear infections is a welcomed side effect of the vaccine.
