Nona

It is extremely rare for a colonisation of Pseudomonas to ever be eradicated, the best to be hoped for is to keep the numbers down below that which will cause a pneumonia. Cyprofoxasin is the antibiotic of choice for oral administration, for a serious flare up goes on IV's of Cephtazadene (sp?) They also have him on inhaled colomycin which helps to prevent a build up. The consultant was concerned that he had not reacted so remarkably with the I's this time and followed it up with yet another oral two weeks of Cypro. THe talk is now for him to have a double wammy of IV's adding in gentomycin next time and hopefully before the bacteria has got as out of hand as it did this time. Between flare ups his sputem does not grow pseudomonas but the bug is still there colonising the damaged areas of lung. I would recommend that whenever you are producing exscess secretions you get them to check specifically for Pseudo.

We are walking a double edged sword at the moment as the fact that he has Pseudomonas puts him at extra risk of life threatening pneumonia and if the consultant would put that in writing we would get a place for respite for him at the Children's hospice but how do we bring ourselves to ask the consultant to declare him life threatened?Tina Hillier Mum to , 12 years old and possesor of an Extra Special Chromosome.
