Guest guest
Janet, I'm sorry I almost offended you. But if I don't know what almost offended you I can't keep from doing it in the future. I tried to carefully word it so as to not tout one view or another and yet bring it up as I do believe it is relevant. Jennie -has no clue why the below would be close to offensive. Feel free to tell me off list if you think it inappropriate for the list. mossbtweenmetoes@... Thanks. Feel free to not tell me at all if you don't have an 11 ft pole. <g> J Re: We "speak" a different "emotional" language. I suppose the whole thing comes down to a theory of origins. If you subscribe to the theory of evolution then I suppose it is very possible that some beings might evolve without a moral compass. If you subscribe to a religious explanation for the universe then saying someone has no conscience becomes a moral dilemma in and of its self depending on which of the many religious views you hold to. Jennie, I found your post helpful and insightful but when I got to the end, and read the part I copied here... I'm not going to touch this with a ten foot pole.... Janet ZEE almost offended. Guest guest
Many non-religious people also believe humans are born with a moral compass. What offends about religion is how it creates a division between 'us' and 'them'. Believers/non-believers, saved/unsaved, the faithful/infidels. "the bells of hell go ting-a-ling for you but not for me" ... Janet ZEE who is not in the club. What’s strange, is that while you won’t touch that one, this is the one part of the email that hit me the best (isn’t it funny how something hits 2 people so differently). It goes to backgrounds and what you believe. I just don’t understand how someone couldn’t have a moral compass because MY beliefs (and dare I say faith) teaches me that we were created with a moral compass. Because of my religious background, I believe we were designed (or possible altered post-Adam) with a built-in formulary for right or wrong. So for me, when some psychiatrist tries to say that there is really no such thing as a conscience, THAT is offensive to me because my faith and belief system says we do. When I’m forced to take (okay, I’m going to say it) God out of the equation, I am placed in a moral dilemma and that’s when I become offended. For those without a religious backing, that is a tremendous “leap of faith” (okay, bad pun), but for those of us with it, it’s what we base our day-to-day lives on. -:¦:- (¯`'•.¸(¯`a Kathleen Simpson´¯)¸.•'´¯)-:¦:- From: aspires-relationships [mailto:aspires-relationships ] On Behalf Of Janet ZimmermanSent: Monday, February 04, 2008 4:28 PMTo: aspires-relationships Subject: Re: We "speak" a different "emotional" language.
