Guest guest
Hi , I do not mind being called ASpie, and many of my ASpie friends feel the same- it originated as a term related to the Asoperger Pride movement, and is not merely a diminutive of Asperger. I have friends who prefer Aspergian or Aspergan-- it comes from a website where one can join a mythical (well, maybe not completely mythical?) country called Aspergia. An Aspergan passport is a homemade orange bracelet, of any material. To learn more about this, google "Aspergia". I have a few friends, dx=ed with AS, who prefer being called "autistic" and nothing more, out of respect for the people on the spectrum who would not be classified as AS, but are still people and still on the same spectrum that we are (yes, I hold that opinion too- it is a spectrum- we need not be exactly alike to share a lot!). Of course, I think I am still a person. and really feel more comfortable just thinking of myself as human. To me, being a person is a definition I make- I need not prove it- and I simply define AS ande NT as members of a larger class of "people". There are many ASpies (or other people who are AS) who feel that division differently than I do. Finally, among autistic people, we would not call ourselves "people with autism"- yes, we are people, and we feel that keenly, but we also tend to think of "people with X" as people who would be pretty much the same without X, and in this case it probably is not true. I could get healed of a cold, or a broken leg, or being faceblind- and woould not mind any of that. I could learn to be perfect at identifying facial emotion, and acquire the best social skills in the world- and some of that would be fine with me as well (I would probably get bored at learning all the etiquette rules the Queen or England uses, at some point before I learned them all!) I would really like to be able to empathize in real time. Still, there are parts of being ASpie that I would not willingly get healed of, like (the strengths on other lists). For me, synesthesia is quite pretty, and adds color ot my world. Mathematics feels like my first language- I would hate to forget how to speak it. I remember back to before I was born- and many of these memories are excellent! And, more importantly, I am not prejudiced against a person simply because he or she does not act normally- I would not want to lose that ability either--NTs have it too sometimes, but feel it differently inside them from the way it feels inside of me--mine comes from processing and experience, whereas theirs comes from a different place, but is still valid and every bit as strong and good. , ASpie or AS or ASpergan or Human, but not "person with AS"david bailey wrote: some dislike being called aspies, some ask to be called apsergians, yeah, you AS people can seem odd, but to give benefit of the doubt, it may seem that the person asking doesnt know how to ask a group of AS. for example a grouping of owls is called a parliament. a grouping of starlings is called a murmuring. a grouping of irish in the back of a police van is called a paddy wagon. a group of israelis is called a kibbutz? so what do we called ourselves? you aspies seems to be the accepted non inflammatory term adapted. 36 m diagnosed AS <msrpsilverlycos> wrote: I don't appreciate being stereotyped as part of "you AS people".
