EN and Pimples/Folliculitis?

I'm recovering from my 3rd and worst flare-up of EN. I've had it now

for about 5 weeks, and am beginning to feel much better as the EN

lesions are peeling away and the pain and inflammation is subsiding.

However, I've noticed that as the lesions are healing, they seem to

form pimples that scab over. There are only a few of these pimples,

and they form in a hair follicle, so I thought maybe it was

folliculitis caused by the local inflammation. Throughout the flare-

up, I had canker sores (lasted about a month), painful pimples in my

scalp, and occasional pimples on my arms and chest. These pimples

heal by peeling, which seems odd to me. Has anyone else had any of

these symptoms during a flare-up? Am I really dealing with EN or

something else? My dermatologist has no clue what's going on other

than that it's all probably related to the EN, and I can't even talk

to my rheumatologist at this point because she says it's just another

reason why I need to get on methotrexate. This recent flare-up

occurred when I got too low on my prednisone dose-- 2.5 mg. I've

been on 2.5 to 20 mg of prednisone for 6 months, and I've been trying

to wean off it as my symptoms subside. I was tapering very slowly--

1 mg per 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how I felt. Once I got to 2.5 mg

I started developing the lesions again, which led to my current flare-

up.

Thanks,

April

I did notice that I had painful pimples on my scalp as well. However, I just assumed that they were the same flareups that I had on my legs and not pimples. But now that I think of it, they were pimples or atleast "pimple like".April Giangerelli wrote: I'm recovering from my 3rd and worst flare-up of EN. Hello and April,

I also had pimples on my scalp previously. They have

been gone for awhile, but I still have a scaly scab(?)

where one was that does not want to go away.

I have had a continuous flare since March. The

beginning was the worst and it is usually tolerable

with Naproxen now. That is until I started on

Amoxicillin 5 days ago. This is a know trigger and it

is irritating my lumps.

Thanks,

Vicki

Hi April

Was interesting reading your message, as I sometimes wonder if I am

also dealing with something other than EN. Again like yourself, I

dont think my Doctor or Dermatologist has a clue. When I get a flare

up of my EN, it is normally only 1 very painful lump. I recently had

a flare where this 1 lump(on the inner side of my shin/lower leg) was

painful for weeks, as usual it was hot to touch in the area.

Normally, i do nothing but take either paracetamol or ibuprofen for

the pain. I then went on holiday for a week, as soon as i arrived at

my destination my lump decided to become open and everything went

downhill from there. I dont know if it was the plane ride that

triggered it! What then happens when my lump opens, is the entire

surrounding area just erupts into several open

wounds/sores/abscesses? I was bedridden for the next 3 weeks, I

literally couldn't walk, as the leg didn't like being down. My leg

looked a mess, the 1 lump had now become a huge area half way up my

leg of open sores. The strange thing is the swabs they took always

showed that there wasnt an infection there!! However I was put on

various antibiotics. I have now noticed that the healing process now

seems to have cause several raised lumps clustered together, dont

know what that is and I am worried that they look as though they

could open at any moment! It never ends. I see my Dermatologist this

Tues (havent seen them in over a yr)so maybe I can get some answers.

Am curious, you mention you see a Rheumatologist can I ask what for?

I am also under one for my rare form of arthritis! Methotrexate? I

need to go and read about that, its amazing what I have learned on

here in only a day. Take care

Regards

Clare

xx

PS: I loved it when I was on Prednisone which was prescribed for a

bad flare of my HS(another skin condition) as it helped enormously

with my arthritis, it was as if my life was just beginning. But my

doctors refused to keep me on it because of the potential side

effects of it. I was gutted because as soon as i stopped it, back

came my half a living lifestyle of constant daily pain!
