Thousands of people in more than 25 countries have danced this "prayer for peace among people and peace with the Earth." Dancing together is a way to make our wishes for change in the world more powerful. In large group dances, something exceptional often occurs. When enough people move together with a purpose, a profound force can emerge through which individual expression dissolves into a larger group spirit. This is an ancient phenomenon that existed in many cultures as they have evoked the spirit of the group, enacting in dance what they hope to see take place in their lives – bringing rain, growing crops, initiating the young, and sending the dead to rest. This unifying force can renew, inspire, teach, and heal, and through the Planetary Dance people all around the world can engage dancing in the service of peace. At the Figment Festival, we will perform the heart of the Planetary Dance, The Earth Run, a simple walking and running circle dance that everyone can do. Just before stepping into the circle each dancer dedicates his or her run to a personal, social or political issue that they would like to renew their commitment to take action toward. The entire dance is held by the sustaining beat of the drum located in the center of the circle. All people who want to dance for change in their lives and the healing of the planet are welcome to join. The Planetary Dance is structured to welcome all people regardless of dance experience or physical ability. The Planetary Dance is sponsored by the nycExpressive Arts Studio, a community based organization focusing on the integrated use of the arts in healing and social change contexts. Expressive Arts fundamentally assumes that the arts are very naturally related to our everyday lived experience and that there is an elemental unity among the various artistic disciplines that inform and deepen their relationships. Dances inspire color and space in paintings, or poems wind their way into rhythmic tunes and harmonic cadences. This transfer between the arts allows for a meaningful and creative exploration of their relevance to our lives. Located in Redhook, Brooklyn, our programs include community workshops, individual sessions and professional training.Join us, and more than 25 other countries, on Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, 2008 at the Figment Festival as we run the Planetary Dance where all people gather and dance for peace in their lives and on the planet.
