Why doesn't the general public know much about this syndrome?

I agree completely. I actually think that there is a much higher incidence of AS than anyone has any idea. Women are clearly (to me anyway) under-dx-ed. There are also people who would be in serious trouble socially if they ever were forced into the kinds of situations with which they cannot deal, but who have learned tricks to get by. There are others who never need a whole lot of change in their lives, and learn one culture very well, and stick to it. In a homogeneous setting, where a lot of ritual is part of life, then there are fewer errors to make, and when ones family and community are forgiving (for example, if a person can say he or she is hard of hearing or does not have good eyesight), then other errors are more readily forgiven. Finally, if one has enough money, then one may be able to afford a certain degree of solitude without explaining it.
